A mother’s sacrifice is the most eternal love that God has given to each one of us. Sacrifice is an act of living for others, not for the sake of oneself. In the book Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by a comedian from South Africa, Trevor Noah, his mother has sacrificed and risked her life to raise him during the apartheid era in South Africa. Noah was born to a mixed family, his father is white, his mother is black, and they committed a crime for having sexual relations with a person of another race during the apartheid era. “She would hold my hand or carry me, but if the police showed up she would have to drop me and pretend I wasn’t hers, like I was a bag of weed.” (Noah 28). His mother has lied so many times in order to protect him from getting taken away by the polices. Give birth to a child doesn’t make you a mother, the sacrifice and effort to raise your kid is what makes you a mother.
Raising a child is extremely difficult. It costs you money, your time, and your efforts. Not to mention, during the pregnancy, the mother could get some common complications of pregnancy such as anorexia, high blood pressure, breakouts, and easily get tired. Being a mother means you have to face a lot of challenges and they’re not easy to get through. For instance, in Born A Crime, Noah shared apartheid was the biggest challenge that prevents him from living a normal life like the other kids in his neighbors. His mother has to keep him in the house at all time and hide him from the polices whenever they to public places. “I’ve got dozens of pictures of me walking with this woman who looks like me but who isn’t my mother. And the black women standing behind us who looks like she’s photobombing the picture, that’s my mom.” (Noah 28). Even the simple thing like take pictures with your child, Noah’s mother still can’t do. In fact, she has to stand behind and endure herself from looking at her son taking pictures with the other woman, who people thinks that’s his mom.
A mother-child relationship can be one of the most complicated and rewarding of all relationships existed in this world. A mother and her child have a special bond only they could understand. Throughout the book Born A Crime, Noah describes his complicated feelings he has toward his tough-loving mother. “I was nine years old when my mother threw me out of a moving car.” (Noah 5). From the start, Noah hated his mom because she always being strict to him and he didn’t understand why until he got older. His mother threw him out from the car incident was to save his life, “I was too confused and too angry about getting thrown out of the car to realize what happened. My mother had saved my life.” (Noah 17). She is helping her son to break the historic cycle of repression and violence he was born into. Moreover, Noah’s mother is his role-model. From the beginning of the book, in the dedication page, Noah wrote “For my mother. My first fan. Thank you for making me a man.” Her determination is what influenced him at every step along his journey.
A mother is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. When the whole world turns away from you, she’s the one that turns toward you. When you fall, she’s the one that helps you up and when your heart is filled with despair, she’s the one that gives you a glimpse of hope. You can fool most of your friends most of the time, but you can’t fool mom. She sees right through you and always knows what’s wrong. Once she gives you that special hug everything seems okay. In particular, in Born A Crime, Noah’s best friend is also his mother. “Other than those few instances of walking in the park, the flashes of memory I have from when I was young are all most all indoors, me with my mom in her tiny flat, me by myself at my gran’s.” (Noah 30). He couldn’t make any friends because he was kept inside during his childhood, and his mother and grandmother were only his friends. However, he felt completely okay and he did learn a lot of experiences that made him a person he is today. Everyone has the friends that they call their best friend forever. I do too! I call her my best friend, my hero, my lifesaver, my world, and that’s my mom. She has been by my side since my first breath, my first cry to my first broken heart and I know that no matter what I do, she will always be there full of forgiveness and will provide the shoulder for me to cry on. Not only is she my best friend but I am her best friend too. She was there for my first breath and I will be there for her last, and we will be together forever.
The love of those who give birth to us is probably the purest sentiment of a human. Sacrifice can not buy with money but buy with your time, your efforts, and your life. Referring to the book Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, being a mother is not only mean that sacrifice for your child, but it also means that being a good role model for your child to follow, and being a best friend that your child can trust you all the time. Always love your mother because you will never compensate for what she has done for you.
