In William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the main topic of the play is related love, as the characters became involved with personal conflicts involving the issue of love, The characters— Titania, Demetrius, Lysander, Helena, Puck, Hermia, and Egeus- spend a night in the dark and mysterious woods, causing each character to act different resulting in arguments, disagreements, and forms of unfaithfulness and love, In Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, these relationship issues such as arguing and conflict, blindness of love, and the exploitation of a person for a relationship. In one way, love relates to the current world because, as with any relationship, there are often conflicts causing bickering and arguing between the two people which is usually the start for a nonexistent relationship or strong relationship (if things can be fixed and worked out).
In Shakespeare’s play, the two characters Oberon and Titania argue amongst each other over a young Indian boy and whether they should keep him. In Act 2, Scene 1 and line 106, Titania says to her lover “Set your heart at rest.” because of Oberon believes that he should use the Indian boy for physical labor. In addition, Oberon and Titania continue to argue with Oberon eventually refusing to leave the forest without Titania letting him use the Indian boy as he says, “Give me that boy and I will go with thee.” As a teenager, there are often changes that go on around the person’s body, and as while some are physical, there are some that are emotional and mental. Specifically, with puberty, many teens sometimes have a spontaneous and instant love for one person, however, with this “love at first sight” motto, some people can become blinded by the negatives of a relationship.
In Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 161-163, Oberon promises “Having once this juice, I’ll watch Titania when she is asleep and drop the liquor of it in her eyes.” and as a result, this causes Titania to fall in love with the first thing she sees once she wakes up, who unfortunately, is Nick Bottom, Nick Bottom is a self-centered, ego-centric, and boastful character all without having the skills and qualities he brags about. Nick Bottom‘s name comes from his personality, matching his last name. In addition, Nick Bottom turns into an ass physically, with him saying “You see an ass head of your own, do you?”. This also shows how blind Titania is under the love potion as she is unable to see the fact that she has fallen in love with a man who is half an animal. In addition to blindness and arguing, there is also the element of love triangles As with teens today, there are often love triangles, where one person loves another person however, that person likes someone else.
In one example, Demetrius says “There is no following her in this fierce vein“. So sorrow‘s heaviness doth heavier growl”, making him upset as l-Iermia accuses him of killing Lysander, As a result, this shows how caring Hermia is about Lysander, saying “Out, dog! Out, cur! Thou drivest me past the bounds of maiden’s patience” when she believes he had killed Lysander. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, although the play was written years ago, his writings are still enjoyed today by many people and still the basis of teachings as well. In addition, his portrayal of love is still relevant among teens today. In William Shakespeare‘s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the portrayal of love is still a representation of teenage love today, as many teens still experience issues such as arguing, blindness of love, love triangles amongst other people.
