I have a deep sense of wanting to care for people. I never know there was a theory in nursing on the way I practiced being a nurse. I just took it as it was my calling for me. I have just started my first semester towered my Master’s Degree in Nursing and never know I was practicing different theories every day. I was awakened by this when I read different theory and practice. I can use this knowledge and incorporate into the way I care for my patients and to teach my students when I become a Nurse Educator after graduation.
As I work toward my Master’s Degree in Nursing I will adapt to mastering my patient-nurse relationship. I plan on using listing and communication with an understanding of my patients as theorist Imogene King. Understanding and adopting Imogen king’s theory of nursing: Theory of goal attainment. I can provide optimal care to all my patients.
King’s Theory of Goal Attainment defines nursing as ‘process of action, reaction, and interaction by which nurse and patient share information about their perception in the nursing situation.’ By being a good communicator and listener I will be able to develop an effective care plan to set goals that my patient can achieve. By evaluating the information and taking into account the appropriate actions that can be obtained by the patient to reach the set goals. Including the patient/client in the decision-making process will lead to goal attainment.
Taking this action into practice will help me to obtain the proper goal setting for my patients. Being an active listener and setting of an attainable goal is not just for my patient, but for my future student as well. I will use the elements of interaction, perception, communication and growth and development into play within the classroom as a Nurse Educator. To help students develop their own goal and the application to achieve their desired outcomes.
I will use the Servant Leadership as another guide in my nursing profession. Servant leadership is my second professional goal I am striving to master. Understanding the value of praise and encouragement can improve or motivate oneself to be and do the best one cane. The ability to see and understand how my actions can affect my staff, my family, my patients, and even my future student is important to me. I am aware that being a nurse is more the skills I Have learned to do assistants and carry out doctor’s orders.
I am in a powerful position to be a positive role model to everyone I come into contact with. I have an opportunity to be the voice for my patients that have no voice by being their advocate. To serve on committees helping develop and carry out needed improvement within the healthcare system. Encouraging teamwork as one unit to give care and education to patients as a leader, a servant leader.
To serve others more than my own needs. To maintain my professional goals, I must have a goal to maintain myself care and relaxation with reflection. This is something I rarely do for myself and don’t realize how important it can be. Not just to make a good grade but to stop and think about how my day went and if there is anything I can improve, and if so how.
To acknowledge my achievements even the smallest one is important, not only the big ones. To get a deeper meaning of my educational lessons and how I will incorporate them into my own teaching one day. I let the hustle and bustle of life get me off focus at times. Life can be going in two different directions at times, but if I want to achieve my professional goal I must stay focused.
