NASA are now hiring their next batch of astronauts to go to the moon. The new recruits will train for the Artemis program. This program is designed to land the first woman and next man on the moon by 2024. The program members will be able to go to the International Space Station, to the Moon and on Mars. Artemis astronauts will also stand where no human has ever stood: the Moon’s South Pole.
Hello! My name is Sara Kvaska. I’m currently a junior at Harvard studying Computer Science with a secondary in Astrophysics! I’m originally from the small mountain town of Morganton, North Carolina, where I developed a love for watching the sky during nights wondering if there were extraterrestrials watching us. Today, I surprised myself by sending my application requirements to participate in the Artemis program.
You know each and everybody has ambition in life. We cannot succeed unless we have a focused target. Such a target in my life is to become an astronaut . Since I was a small child I’ve had a love of science and technology, particularly anything space related. The love I have on the atmosphere around, planets and my curiosity to explore more and more has instilled a thought inside me. Every time I learn about Space, it provokes me to be a part of it. Looking at the stars, I always wonder what makes them so important.

The gigantic size of the rockets, the spacesuit, decreasing gravity, traveling light-years away gives me goosebumps and spikes my curiosity levels. The desire to find if life exists somewhere else on the vast universe keeps me hooked to my dreams. No one can deny the intrigues of the night sky. The first rhymes that we learned in kindergarten were those of the twinkling stars. Even our great ancestors were bewildered by them. The cave arts denote constellations, planets, and astronomical events. We have mythological stories that portray life outside our world. The entire branch of astronomy is dependent on the stars.
I hope to accomplish my ambitions through sheer hard work and dedication. I’m pretty good at math and i’m placed in the advanced math class for high school. I also take care of my health and exercise regularly, as physical fitness is a definite requirement for getting selected in space research agencies across the world. It is said that to be an astronaut, one must be an adventure lover, and should love to experience uncertainty. For this purpose, I would like to go on long Jungle safaris. One must also be ready to learn robotics, fly airplanes, and should have an excellent knowledge in various fields like geology, chemistry, and physics.I want to do a work that no one else can. I want to do impossible thing and make the impossible possible.
We humans are driven by an insatiable curiosity. It’s in our DNA. We want to know more, discover new worlds and push the boundaries of our scientific and technical limits. This is how we progress and develop. Space exploration provides us insights into the world beyond. The knowledge we have gleaned from robotic and manned missions (Apollo Program for exemple) has unlocked many a secret about our universe. They have delivered precious scientific data and deepened our understanding of stars, planets, galaxies… Space exploration opens up the possibility of extracting minerals and metals from planets and asteroids.
I do understand that success is not a guarantee but I am ready to enjoy the process and not the goal alone. The road is long and the outcome is uncertain, but it is in trying to achieve this lofty ambition that we learn to become our best selves. The next human being that steps foot on the Moon will be an American, an American woman and it will be me.
