Leaders play an integral part in the determination of the progress, development, growth, and success of their respective organizations and institutions which they are entitled to lead. This implies that leadership is the most important factor which every organization must endeavor to empower and give the first priority in any activity the organization is intending, planning or projecting to undertake either in the present moment or in future (Essays, 2018).

Ideally, there are many leadership styles and models which a particular organization may adopt in its activities or which an individual leader may decide to apply in the running and managing his or her entitled roles and responsibilities. Each given leadership style has its own strengths and weaknesses, and, in many cases, different types of activities or services carried out by a specific organization call for a particular style of leadership which is more suitable or that style when adopted and implemented effectively is likely to ensure that the organization achieves its own mission, goals, and objectives. For example, a manufacturing company manager style of leadership may be very different from the one adopted by a medical institution manager (Doody&Doody, 2012).

Despite the choice differences which may occur when a manager is deciding on which leadership style to use, the important factor is to consider is the assurance that the adopted leadership model will help the organization achieve success while at the same time ensuring that all other functions carried out by the organization run smoothly. After a thorough assessment of the leadership alternatives that can be applied within a nursing facility or rather in a health care system, I found the following scores in regard to each of the three leadership styles outlined below.

Transformational leadership is composed of four key elements namely; idealized influence (II); inspirational motivation (IM); intellectual stimulation (IS) and lastly, individual consideration (IC) (Hughes, 2014). All these elements describe the scope of transformational leadership style in terms of how it can be effectively utilized when working with different types of employees, a group or in a teamwork environment. Keenly assessing the expertise as well as the level of professionalism in the field of nursing, transformational leadership is the best suitable leadership style which can significantly help one to develop his or her skills since it entails information sharing and motivating those who perform well in their respective job responsibilities.

From my own assessment, the score of each element of transformational leadership is as follows; II score is 13, IM score is 12, IS score is 16 while the score of IC is 18. Cumulatively, all the elements of transformational leadership have a maximum total score of 59. This means that transformational leadership alone qualifies for a total of 59 points out of a total score of 80. Considering the nature of nursing as a profession, my junior staff consists of highly trained personnel who clearly understand what is needed to be done and when to do it. By effectively implementing and aligning my leadership style with the day to day activities of the hospital, both the junior staff and all other employees in the hospital will definitely increase their personal input and performance because everyone will be familiar with the task and duty he or she is assigned (Marshall, 2010). Transformational leadership also requires little supervision since every employee in the facility is aware of what needs to be done and he or she knows which role he or she is supposed to undertake within a particular period of time (Gathoni, 2017).

Transactional leadership that is embedded or cemented to the organizational culture where the manager involves the staff in a kind of awarding system where the best performing employees get rewards as motivating factors (Cherry, 2018). Assessing this form of management style, the score is about 56 points out of the possible 80 points. Transactional leadership style with an operational team that works in cooperation with everyone in the health facility, it is clear that we can achieve our goals and objectives in a short period of time without necessarily having to do many follow-ups (Hutchinson & Jackson, 2013). Laissez Faire leadership model qualifies for the least score as per my assessment of 36 points out of the total 80 points. This clearly shows that Laissez-faire is not an effective leadership style that can be applied in a health care system and still achieve the intended results and goals.

For me transformational leadership is the best suitable model for any health facility compared to other styles such as transactional and Laissez-faire. I firmly believe that every staff in my organization has the prerequisite skills and expertise needed in the field of nursing and this implies that I feel secure working with such as the team that understands what requires to be done and the principles which control the health care system. My leadership model will ensure that there is a limited occurrence of conflicts which may endanger the delivery of quality health care to patients that upholds their dignity as well as upholding the international health care standards and principles. My staff will also increase their performance since I will regularly motivate and reward the most outgoing staff who reaches or attains the minimum standards threshold. This will lead to the success of our organization by helping us achieve our set goals and objectives.

Again, my leadership style will offer other staff members and employees the chance and opportunity to freely share and forward their ideas in regard to certain issues which they think that they need to be rectified. This leadership style will help me create a collaborative team where everybody or department works in harmony with other departments therefore ensuring that challenges are noticed at an early stage. Under my leadership model, I will also motivate my staff thus promoting their morale which translates to high performance and personal output. I will also promote creativity among the employees by making sure that I always provide them with the materials and equipment they require as well as giving them ample time to do their assigned duties without compromise.

My nursing philosophy is to take care of the patient with respect and providing all the things that they need. As a nurse, I want to make a difference in the life of my patients. I want to give them hope. Nurses have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the lives of patients and their families every day. Nurses have an immense influence over a patient’s healthcare experience, and their actions can provide a lasting impact (Bisk, 2017). I want to treat them not just a patient; I want to treat them as a family. My source of inspiration to become a nurse, is the desire to help other people and to take care of them in times of their needs. I am also the kind of person that wants to make a huge difference in people’s lives and serves as a guardian angel to the patients.

I also believed that in caring the patient it is also important to include their family in the plan of care. My core values as an individual is caring, kindness and honesty. The true meaning of caring for me is showing kindness and care to the people who needs it. Showing kindness to others shows that you are a good person. Being honest shows that you are trustworthy. The focus of nursing is on patient needs, patient healing, patient safety, and patient empowerment (Chitty & Black, 2007). I believed that my core values would help me to become a good nurse. It is a part of me that I will carry even outside my workplace. My contribution right now is to be a role model to other people who wants to be a nurse. I want to show them that nursing is a great career because you have the responsibility to help other people. Helping other people and making them happy, is one of the best feelings in the world.
