Being a gay male and hearing people say ‘homosexuality is unnatural’ I wondered if it was, why wasn’t it has been eliminated from the gene pool? Why would we still have homosexual characters among all species and primates? If we still have homosexual characters then there must be some helpful purpose. Well there is and it is to help form bonds and to strengthen pre-existing ones. 2 studies published in the Journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour found out by the University of Portsmouth have suggested that homosexual actions and behaviors are linked to social bonds.
Another study published in the Scientific Reports journal suggested that homosexuality is determined by genetics and that there is a slight difference in the genome that is made up of hetero and homosexual men. Yet another study with twins showed a link between genetics and determining their sexual orientation. Many more studies have shown a link between homosexuality and genetic as well as forming bonds.
The 2 studies published by the Journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour tested progesterone levels (a hormone that is shown to be active and present when in social situations and when a person is forming bonds with others) within the 2 groups of 92 women and another group of 59 male participants. In the women’s group of 92 participants, scientists tested for progesterone when they were told more homosexual phrases like “The idea of kissing a person of the same sex is sexually arousing to me”1 and more homophobic statements like “If someone of the same sex made a pass at me I would be disgusted.”

In participants that had higher levels of progesterone when told the more homosexual tale, they were more open to partaking in a homosexual act or they identified as homosexual, but people that had lower levels of progesterone were less likely to partake in homosexual acts. In the second study, a group of 59 men took part in a word puzzle where they gave you words with blanks and you must figure them out by filling in the blanks but they must fall under the category that the word was assigned. For example under the friendship category fr..ds would be friends, category sex br…ts would be breasts, and neutral sq..r. would be square.
Of the men that completed the friendship category, 26% were more likely to partake in and practice in homosexual actives. Those men also wanted to bond with others. It is still to be tested and researched even Fleishman agrees but sees a correlation “It’s very complex, but it is clear there’s a continuum between affection and sexuality, and… the ability to engage sexually with those of the same sex or opposite sex is common…”3 Many studies have suggested that homosexuality can be determined by genetics and that you are born with it. Research done by multiple independent and private research teams have published articles suggesting that being gay is genetic.
One group studied many sets of twins and they found that about a 25-30% correlation between genetics and the genome of the twins was to be the cause of their sexual orientation. Among other research team have found by studying gay brothers that they shared similar markers on their x chromosome and more research was done finding that makers were found on chromosome 8. A group of researchers has made a breaking discovery by observing the brain of homosexual males, homosexual females, heterosexual males, and heterosexual females. What they found was that gay men had a more similar brain structure as the heterosexual female brain structure and that homosexual females brains had close correlations to the heterosexual male brain.
When someone says that they are gay many people say that this is a chose and that the environment they grew up in influenced them. Many people are brought up by heterosexual parents normally being their genetic parents so in those cases that someone is gay then this is completely false. In all cases this is false but this just means that this theory falls apart right away. If a person can be brought up in a way prompting them to be gay then why don’t countries in which it is illegal to be gay, implicit ways so they could never be brought up this way?
This theory doesn’t have much evidence mostly just logical thinking and reasoning. This would also mean that people were brought up with homosexual parents would be homosexual but as we have proved earlier some of this is determined with genetics so this would in turn not have an influence on what they were born with. If something is genetic you can’t really change it unless you use Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats of C.R.I.S.P.R which is a genetic sequencer meaning that it can take out parts of DNA and replace it but scientists don’t or can’t identify any single one ‘gay gene’. Along with C.R.I.S.P.R not being regulatory used on humans and scientist not fully understanding the consequences of C.R.I.S.P.R and how it affects humans.
All in all, science has found that being gay is natural and that it can help society in many ways. This paper is for anyone that said being gay is not natural and that being gay is a chose. Science has proved that it can help for long lasting bonds and strengthen society with those bonds. This also suggests that homosexuality doesn’t and can’t be influenced by outside factors unless you are forced into the closet but. Finally, science has concluded that when you are forming social bonds progesterone is produced and that is linked with homosexual behavior.
