Teen stress can cause many harmful side effects like, illness, peer pressure, grades drop, or even death. Did you know that 68% of those reasons why teenagers stress, is because of school work. If young adults with a full life ahead of them are taking their lives because of too much stress from homework, why are schools still giving us homework? Are we calling our school a murderer? Young adults like me play sports, and do extracurricular activities. I also still have to study for finals on top of doing homework and playing sports. Also every family needs to spend time with each other whether it is just for dinner or watching a show together. A social life is also important to a teenager as well, and being cooped up all day in school for 7 hours does not give us enough time to socialize.
First off, college is very important. People that play sports have a chance to make it to college for free. Since the beginning of summer to the end of October my football teammates all struggled with homework. My teammates told me that they have been staying up till 2 every single night due to homework and studying. If an average person wakes up at around 6:30 am that is only 4 and a half hours of sleep. A teenager needs 9 and a quarter hours of sleep every night, and the amount of sleep I have been getting and the amount of sleep my own teammates are getting is less than half of what we should be getting. When students or teenagers do not get the amount of sleep they should be getting students tend to fall asleep in class which can cause students to miss important lessons.
Additionally, keeping up grades is just as important as extracurricular activities. In fact, in many of my classes our test grade is worth 30% of my grade. Usually the final is 15-20% worth our grade. Teachers assign three and a half hours worth of homework every single day and that adds up. That is seventeen and a half hours of homework a week, not including studying and extracurricular activities. To study and have extracurricular activities on top of three and a half hours a day does not give you much time for sleep. A normal school day is 8 am to 3 pm, that is already 7 hours worth of school and why would we need more hours of work? A social life is very important to our teenage life. In school the only time we get to talk is during break and lunch. That is not enough time to talk to friends. Having friends is very important because friends always have your back and without talking to them what is the point of having friends.
Also, talking with your family or a close relative could help reduce your stress levels. Having good relationships and strong social ties could help you live longer. This statement comes from a review of 48 studies involving more than 300,000 people, which discovered those with the strongest social relationships are 50 percent more likely to live a longer life compared with others who are the least socially integrated. So by having no homework, we are able to spend more time with our family and technically live longer! We are also able to live a more stress free life if we spend more time with our family and not putting in so many hours into homework.
Some people may say that doing homework improves our thinking and memory or helps us develop positive study skills and habits that will help us throughout our life. But doing homework wouldn’t actually improve our thinking and memory because we already learn about the subject being taught to us in class. This would just be making homework be review for what we already know. Also, we would develop positive study skills and habits that would help us throughout life with classwork instead of homework. Therefore, with a teacher who takes their time going through a lesson and passes out classwork, we would never need homework to improve our thinking and memory or help us develop study skills and habits throughout our life. In order to make this happen we can persuade students and teachers to create a no homework policy for the school.
To sum up, teen stress can cause many harmful side effects like, illness, peer pressure, grades drop, or even death. Extracurricular activities can be a way for people to go to college for free. Sleep is also very important and with studying and doing homework does not give you enough sleep. We are in school for 7 hours plus homework and extracurricular activities and studying. Spending time with your family can easily relief stress even if it is just dinner or watching a movie together. Homework is a terrible thing that should be banned.
