Abstract
Amy Tan is one of the most inspiring Asian American writer, her work reflects importance of being a women, identity of culture and her relationship with her mother. In her first novel The Joy Luck Club (1989) she explained cultural contrast along with emotional trauma on the characters throughout the novel .
In her second novel The Kitchen God’s Wife (1991) she express that women of two different generations come together with cultural and emotional bond .In her search for identity she filled the novels with history ,culture and generation gap . In her modes of expression she strive to demonstrate a selective situations for authentic expression of oneself. Tan’s debut novel The Joy Luck Club (1989) about four Immigrant mothers and there American raised daughters who confront for social identity, ethnicity and crucial concerns of women.In each pair of mother daughter relationship described how mother’s past desperately affected the daughter’s present.
Through her novel she made effort to built a strong access to the readers a cultural context and consolidated the entire novel with oriental charm. The strong image of Chinese-American women highlighted with contemporary American literature. In exploration of two different cultures Tan tried to contradict cultural exchanges and concrete the struggles of impact , blend between the characters to communicate and comprehending the narration of art. Her confrontation of two cultures was clearly stated Eastern mystical imagery blend with Western symphony, her unique style of writing she tried to fill a gap between Eastern and Western culture with her art of description.
Her approach to evaluate history and culture with distinct imagination to create a heart touching novel, engage to readers a pleasant reading experience. By her style of writing she balanced two different generations who interpret each other life’s with different perspective .Materialistic love from different time born and raised in two different countries . Struggles and hardships of the mother’s made them more prejudice towards there daughter’s. Daughters are on the other hand want be liberated from there mother’s moderate views search of self-hood in America. Tan art of phrasing different dialect at the same time allow the readers more compelling .The usage of two different language show here respect to the both the culture’s .Her gathering of words made the readers to stay with in the plot and also engage the readers till the end of the novel.
Being raised in a Chinese family Tan always felt that she was force to speak Chinese in a modest and polite manner. She always felt that she is a kind of two intellect due to her language experience. According to her language impose the culture behind it implicitly. Her attempt that imperfect translation of language can be raised due to the barriers between Chinese and American cultural can lead to misperception. Misperception is one of the reason to build gap between mother and daughter due to the linguistics barriers.
Neither of the generation speaks the language of the other effects the mother –daughter relationship. Tan sustain the sense of culture and heritage throughout the novel. The strong impact of history and culture on the immigrant mothers haunted throughout there life .History plays a role to initiate an individual to process of finding identity unable to break the shackles of there past connected by unseen physically and emotional trauma .She was succeeded in exhibiting individual emotional tragedies of those who are immersed with history and trap with cultural agony in transforming crises. The constant misunderstanding between the mothers and daughters regarding culture unable to recognize the value of both the cultures .Efforts made by the Chinese mothers to pass the culture and heritage to their younger generation.
American born Chinese daughters strive to negotiate the opposed claims made by Chinese values on the one hand and compel to understand the American middle class on the other. They often felt that they trapped between the two worlds and caught deep cultural and geographical chasm. The dispute between these women due to born and raised in two different cultures and generations are unable find the common grounds. Tan raised the stories of each women’s enhance with social and emotional resonance in the past and present inheritance .Both the mothers and daughters grappled with their past , their present ,identity and gender in order to construct there own life story and create themselves with new identity in the world.
Amy Tan in her novel she mainly focused on mother – daughter relationship and signify diversity of Chinese-American cultural difference and generational conflicts of Chinese-born first generation and American- born second generation.Her novel explores ethnic relationship between women of same generation. Therefore her study mainly focuses on multicultural and multiracial heritage with collective identity including “Asian American “itself. Amy Tan’s second novel The Kitchen God’s Wife ( 1991) in this novel we can find the manifestation of Chinese culture and its history .It mainly concerns to create a powerful image of mother and her experiences both victim of old China and the sider of the America.
The novel mainly focuses on cultural inheritance and her confrontation as immigrant .Tan addresses the issue cultural discrimination of women,a role of sisterhood ,relationship between mother – daughter,generation gap, and firmness of women during the adiversity.
