According to Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligence, there are over seven types of intelligence learning styles. These styles include visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social, and solitary. A person would automatically assume that if a person prefers to hear information as a better way to memorize material, they should be given information auditorily. In the past few years, classrooms and schools have accepted these practices, but some are finding that it is becoming a waste of time and money. With seemingly little evidence to prove that creating several learning areas is actually efficient, schools reject the concept of different mindsets.

By creating different learning styles, this also takes up space and costs money that some schools do not have. This has been an issue in society for years now because children might not be receiving the best type of education that best suits their needs. To better understand if subjecting children to different types of learning styles in an effective way of teaching, many studies have been conducted. In 2014, Simone Dalla Bella, Simone Falk, and Tamara Rathcke conducted the study, When Speech Sounds Like Music. This study was accompanied to see if repetition can boost memory and perception.

This was done by conducting two different experiments. The experiment tested the effects of two pitch properties and three rhythmic properties. Between rhythm and pitch, the probability and speed of occurrence were examined. This was conducted by giving different sentences in German sentences to the participants. These sentences were relevant to musical processing. There were sixty-two native speaking Germans as participants in the experiments (49 females and 13 males ranging from 19 and 46 years old.) After subjecting the participants to the different pitches and rhythms, results could be collected.

The results show that both pitch and rhythmic properties are key features in memorization. But some properties showed to be more efficient than others. Stable tonal targets led to faster actualization than tones on a more scalar interval. Same went for the sentences that had regular recurring beat structures rather than the rhythm being segmented. In the end, the study could demonstrate that recurrence allowed listeners to reinterpret specific structures of spoken words in musical structures. Although the experiment itself does not state a way to fix the problem, it does bring up an interesting point.

Through the study conducted, When Speech Sounds Like Music, it shows that humans actually learn and memorize better when exposed to different pitches and rhythms. This shows that it is true that humans can memorize materials in different learning styles. Because of this, I do not think schools should change their curriculum as a whole, or the way they ultimately teach. As seen in futures past there has been immense success in the way schools instruct their information. But I do think schools should be wearing of this information and build on it. This could mean that not every day of learning in lecture style or PowerPoints, but instead hands on activities that children can get involved with.

Yes, there are other issues that come with this problem including spacing, timing, and money, but I feel as it if there was a chance that children could better their education but changing how they absorbed the information, than try to adjust to the child’s needs. This has been an issue in society for years now but because of experiments likes these, it makes it possible to shed some light showing that there is not just one type of education a child could get.
