Climate change refers to the change in regular weather patterns in a certain region or even the earth as a whole over a lengthy period of time. Over the past years, climate change has become a serious controversy for the issues it causes. Climate change ends up costing the global economy a great deal.

Climate change contributes to natural calamities like droughts, wildfires and tsunamis. These natural calamities leads to crops getting washed off with floods or grain reserves shrinking below acceptable levels. After severe calamities, infrastructure has to be rebuilt with the supply of clean water which increases government costs. The environment partakes in the economy and therefore has a crucial impact on it.

It’s safe to say that Japan has experienced its fair share of harsh climate with a typhoon’s uncommon 360 degree loop over Japan to teeming rainfalls after the declaration of the end of the rainy season. However, Japan cannot be criticized for its poor weather conditions for the island lays on the back of a very complex set of tectonic plates thus there are a lot of volcanoes and onshore and offshore earthquake faults that can cause massive earthquakes and maybe even tsunamis.

Although such calamities cannot be avoided, Japan can only try to prevent these disasters, maybe through reducing their level of global warming, which usually instigates natural disasters. One example of their efforts being : in December of 2015, Japanese representatives have met in Paris with officials of other nations that Tokyo collaborates with in mutual low-carbon technology transfer programmes. Japan would provide low-carbon technologies to developing nations and use the reductions gained toward its own target of reduced gas emissions. Japan has so far agreed with 16 countries to implement projects under the framework. Of them, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Myanmar and Thailand joined the effort this year.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency is improving its Emergency Warning System to sketch the intensity of any water-related dangers, prioritizing the handicapped people and those with special needs. They have built the ‘Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel,’ which is a system formulated to aid Tokyo’s flood defenses. It is also the world’s largest underground flood water diversion system. A lot of expenditure was put into this project. There are tunnels underground to redirect water away from the country’s most sensitive floodplains.

Japan’s economy is working its way to a climate resilient one in whatever way it can. Japan’s International Cooperation System adopted its ‘JICA Climate Change Cooperation Strategy’ which commits to promoting the transformation to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy in developing countries with Japan’s advanced, innovative technologies. They are developing a project known as the ‘Nippon Causeway on Tarawa’ which is a road designed considering sea level rise by climate change. This ends up saving a lot of money because a rise in sea levels usually leads to negative economic growth and especially impacts roads which generally may need to be reconstructed which costs governments a hefty lot.

More actions towards their efforts to reduce effects of climate change on different industries, especially the economy include many of the country’s largest corporations following a low-carbon future. 64 Japanese companies have set emission reduction goals in line with scientific facts which state what are needed to keep the global temperature below 2 degree celsius. 11 Japanese companies have committed to provide a 100% renewable energy through a global initiative linking businesses that promise a 100% renewable energy. All of these businesses understand that tackling climate change is needed for the ensurity of a safe and stable future and also to generate new opportunities for growth.

Japan, through its various efforts, has proven that they have understood how crucial the subject of climate change is and how it affects different and important industries of the country. They are partaking in initiatives which promote the reduction of natural disasters caused by the change in climate and they initiate their own ideas to prevent damage caused by climate change. Although they are sometimes claimed to show ‘slow progress’, they have proven that they will take and create actions to combat negative consequences of climate change. With these efforts, Japan’s economy will soon be completely safe and undisturbed at all by climate change.
