When we serve, the focus isn’t about yourself but about the people you are serving. Serving shows you care about the people you are helping and you are trying to make a difference.
When you volunteer, you benefit others and yourself. You can learn a lot from serving. You can learn how to be a good at service. Gratitude comes with serving.
Serving is something you do as a volunteer. If you don’t want to serve, no one can make you serve. By serving, you show humility and humbleness and you are being selfless.
When you serve you develop a relationship with those you serve. I developed many relationships when I went to Belize. Serving is important because of this. Someone could be really impacted by starting a relationship with them. By starting a relationship, you can grow that relationship.
Serving is essential for us to do. You can impact a person by serving. Serving makes others feel loved. You can bring joy and happiness to someone’s life by helping them.

All of these things are very important in our world. If people don’t serve, how can we make a difference or connect with our community? It’s very hard to without serving. Belize is a small country in South America. It gained its independence in 1981. The population is about 375,000 people. Mayans used to live in Belize thousands of years ago. There is still many Mayan ruins scattered throughout Belize today. The time zone in Belize is similar to the United States. We didn’t experience jet lag because of their time zone. They were only an hour off our time zone. They don’t have daylight savings so this is why our time zones were similar. Poverty in Belize is relatively high. According The Borgen Project, (Lano) 43% of the people in Belize live below the national poverty line.
Serving means a lot to the people in Belize. They don’t necessary have everything that we have. Even though they don’t have a whole lot, they are happy. You can see their joy and they are very welcoming.
Tourism is a big thing in Belize. An article that The Borgen Project wrote says (Lano): “Tourism has picked up because Belize possesses the largest living coral reef in the world, and this attracts many divers and marine enthusiasts. Furthermore, U.S. economic expansion has helped boost the tourism industry.” The economy in Belize has problems and faces issues.
This past summer I experienced a trip to Belize in July. The trip impacted me in many ways and learned a lot from it. Serving and building relationships were both major themes throughout the entire one week trip. From the time our group arrived to the time we left, the whole experience was impactful for me. A group of 22 people and myself made this trip down to Belize to serve and create relationships. We went to a small town in northern Belize called Cristo Rey. We were helping at a church in the town. The church was called we served in the northern part of Belize. There is only one airport in Belize so we travelled two hours from the airport to a town called Corozal. We stayed in Corozal and travelled each day to Cristo Rey.
The trip was one full week in total. We arrived Sunday and unpacked. Monday through Thursday were the work days on the trip. Friday was a day off for us. Saturday was a travel day back home. Each day in the morning we had a construction job we did. In the afternoon we teaching and playing time with kids in the village.
At the construction site we were building a room next to an existing building. This room would serve as a classroom for the church. In Belize, they don’t build many houses or buildings out of wood because it is expensive and they have a problem with termites. Termites can eat away at the wood and the building wouldn’t be stable anymore. Instead of using wood, they use concrete blocks for building. They also used metal rebar for reinforcement of the concrete.
In the mornings we worked on the construction site. There was two guys from the town that helped oversee what we were working on and they helped us on the building. First we mixed sand and concrete to make mortar for the blocks. We mixed the sand and concrete on the floor of the building. We laid the block in rows and mortared them together.
The men that helped us from the town had experience in masonry. They took great pride in their work and did a great job. They taught us some of their skills and made sure we were building the room correctly.
The Belizean people have a great sense of community. They are all very close with each other and they are almost like family to each other. They all know each other’s names and hang out with themselves.
Soccer is the biggest sport they play in Belize. They really love playing soccer. Every one of all ages likes to play. The kids really like playing and they are very good at soccer. In each of the towns, they usually have a soccer field where everybody goes to play. In the afternoons, we played soccer with the kids in the town. They were very competitive and they enjoyed the sport. They all liked playing and wanted to play soccer all day.
The culture in Belize is very different from the culture in the United States. How the people act towards each other is different than in the United States. Even with the differences in cultures, the people still appreciated us serving them and they really liked having us.
The food is great in Belize. As we were working, some women in the town made us food to eat. In Belize, they eat a lot of chicken. We had chicken almost every meal. They also made their food spicy. They grow many different kinds of hot peppers and they like eating them or having hot sauce.
The trip to Belize was a great experience. Serving and building relationships is something very important in the world. I learned a lot from this trip. I learned about serving and the benefits to it. This trip was a great opportunity learning about a new culture and building relationships. I learned the importance of serving and the impact it has on people.
