Social networking is a tool which is used by learners of every age group to make new connections, communicate and get help so as to finish obstacles easily. There are a number of platforms which make social networking important to everyone because of these platforms, social networking has become integral part of our lives. The various main platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube etc. These are those tools which have deep impact on students. According to Smith (2016), as of 2015 there is a total worldwide population of 7.3 billion people of which 2.3 billion utilized social media sites. Smith (2016) also notes that one billion social median users are added each day, a number that would amount to a new user being added every 12 seconds. Every coin has two sides, so if there are so many advantages of social media on the life of students then there are also so many bad effects of social media which will be in this research paper.

Research Methodology

This research work regarding the “effect of social media on college students”. It was founded with the help of some online resources. This research work started to do from last week. Apart from this because of lack of time and condition of todays environment and other reasons it was little bit tough to find more stuff from libraries. So, it was completed and researched just from some online stuffs. No doubt, some online books, some site and especially google scholar was very beneficial to completed it. It was very good experience because it helped to increase knowledge about social sites such as helped to learn about the benefits and disadvantages of internet as well as social sites.

The schoolers which are understudies of colleges or higher studies they have extraordinary intrigued in various kinds of social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and so more. There are both good and bad effects of these social networks. According to a Nielsen Media Research study in June 2010 almost 25 percent of students’ time on the internet is now spent on social networking websites (Jacobsen, & Forste, 2011). No doubt every single student is using all social sites, but Facebook is becoming most popular social site and students give first preference to use it and they like the most Facebook. T

he negative effect of using the social media is that students waste so much time on social sites and they can’t do concentrate on their study. (Jacobsen, & Forste, 2011) found that about two-third of the students reported using electronic and online on social sites while in class, studying, or doing homework. Moreover, very critical impact of the social sites in on the grades or GPAs of the students. Students be addict of social networking, they don’t care of their study, exams and in the end, they got low GPA and got failed in examination and sometimes they got depression. Moreover, according to new study by doctoral candidate Ary Karpinski of Ohio State University and her co-author, Adam Duberstein of Ohio Dominican University, college students who use the 500-million-member social network have significantly lower grade point averages (GPAs).

On the other hand, there are so many positive effects of social media on users. First is, with the help of these sites’ students can exchange their knowledge material, they can share information regarding study with each other. “In the same way, “the social networking sites are virtual study halls for a wired generation” (Dyer & Columbia 2010). Students can do enjoy on social sites such as they can share their good memories, they can upload their pictures on social sites. These social locals permit different forms of communication between students such as divider posts, comments, pictures and private messages as well as way to tag photographs in arrange to recognize those in pictures (Junco & Cole-Avent, 2008; Junco & Mastro dicasa, 2007). Even as far back as 2007, 94% of first- year students reported spending time on online social networking websites during a typical week (Higher Education Research Institute, 2007). The impact of Facebook is very bad on college students as compared to other sites (Martinez Aleman &Wartman 2009).

Everybody knows health care is very important for surviving better life but in these days most of students are busy on social sites and they don’t care of their health, they don’t give proper attention of their food. There are so many students/adults in this era which are suffered from health issues and they have so many concerns about the growth of their body. Most of young students reached at the risk of their body development because they have the highest rate of internet use and frequency (Lenhart et al, 2005; Shiffman, 2009; Tokunaga, 2010). All students around the world waste their tome on social network sites which may called internet or social sites addiction and lead to major consequences (Kandell, 1998; Griffiths, 2000). There are so many researching’s which improved so many students addicted from Facebook, they spend lots of time on Facebook, which is very harmful for their health, mind, brainstorm and for eyesight (The Star, 2010). Due to researches made by Young, as a result, she found the overusing of the internet can bring so many health problems which known as mental disorder, which she named Pathological Internet Use PIU (Young, 1998).

Conclusion

This research work exposes or explains about the both bad and good impacts of social media on students as well as on adults. It also revealed how college students are addicted of social sites network and they spend their most of time on social sites such as on using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and other sites. The reason of over usage of networks sometimes they have to face failure in their examination, and they got low GPAs. Apart from this, at some points social sites are helpful for students. With the help of these sites they can share their information, they can share some important knowledge regarding the study, they can also talk to each other very easily. Overall, it proved that social networking is needed web even it has some cons with pros.
