Success comes not without a price. In the realm where “boom” and “pow” signify glory and greatness. Superheroes earn their astounding reputation through multiple tests of personal sacrifice. On multiple levels, they are portrayed as sexually appealing figures with a knack for saving damsels in distress. However, their irresistible sex appeal combats. Their individual desire to preserve their superhero career and create a civilian lifestyle. Thus, pursuing a love interest serves as a foil, and sometimes even a downfall, to each superheroes success. Sexuality contributes to the prosperity of the superhero in the eyes of the public. While love interests and significant. Others distract the superhero from following through with their obligatory duty to protect the welfare of society.

Chiseled abs, defined jawbones, sturdy thighs. Paired with invisibility, telekinesis. And super strength: the perfect formula to accentuate the masculinity of male superheroes and capture the attention of numerous admirers from across the globe. Superheroes are portrayed to be superior figures based upon aesthetic appearance and physical skill. The exhibition of brute strength and charming wit is sure to render each and every damsel’s heart hopeless in the eyes of love.

Not only does apparel contribute to prime masculinity, but it also highlights the sexual appeal of male protagonists in classic comics. Superman, for instance, is depicted with broad shoulders and superhuman strength, allowing him to save a multitude of victims from countless villains and freak accidents. In contrast, Batman, dark and ominous, uses his physical prowess and technical ingenuity to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. The appearance of superheroes asserts their dominance and sexual aptitude over that of female characters.

Superheroes, drawn by a specific love interest, are often misguided and distracted as a result of choosing to pursue a significant other. As a consequence of trying to dominate both their superhuman obligations and individual desires, superheroes encounter a fork in their journey when they are forced to choose between one or the other. Women pose as distractions, either tempting or misleading a hero from following through with his original intentions to protect helpless members of society. Thus, the superhero is forced to make a decision to save an individual that is close to themselves or several strangers in their community. Though commonly perceived as hopeless damsels in distress, love interests can serve as a threat to duties and focus of a superhero on his quest to save society from the deranged grasp of evil.

Additionally, love interests also serve as a reminder to superheroes of the option to live a normal life marriage, family, civilian job. As tempting as the opportunity to live an average life may seem, superheroes are obligated to prioritize the greater good over individual desires. The irrational fear of living forever alone, stuck in the dual identity they’ve created for themselves, allows superheroes to be tempted by the nature of finding a significant other.

In essence, a significant other serves as a fall back plan, in case the superhero fails to fulfill his goals. Otherwise noted, a love interest could merely be the superhero standard to achieve the best of both worlds, to ultimately pursue true love and to capture the hearts of society. Yet, the superhero is faced with another decision between societal obligation to abide by altruistic values or to pursue purely self gratifying goals.

Throughout the super human world, decisions are made with regard to the greater good in hopes to protect the wellbeing of society. Though faced with many conflicts, big and small, superheroes are expected to disregard personal desires in order to properly serve and protect their community from villains, frauds, and criminals. Their depiction of pure courage and strength allows them to accomplish the great takes before them, but also assists in a foil that could potentially lead to their demise: attraction of the love interest, or damsel in distress. Definitively, while masculinity contributes to the superhero’s image in the view of society, love interests divert the humanitarian intentions of the superhero to egocentric motives.
