The in movie, Who Am I This Time, a short film by Kurt Vonnegut staring Academy Award-winners Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken, who portrays Harry Nash. Harry is a great actor at the local theatre in town but is terribly shy and doesn’t speak to anyone outside the theatre. The film starts off with Helene Shaw (Sarandon) is asked to audition for the role of Stella in the production A Streetcar Named Desire. She falls for Harry’s Stanley persona not knowing his true personally. This short film teaches many life lessons about love and battling with identity. I believe this film is directed to a younger crowd (16-26 year olds) because many youngsters have a difficult time discovering themselves and what love truly is. Identity has become a huge problem in children but mainly young adults. Some young adults have trouble with their identity especially when they are introduced to something new like college and meeting new people.

In the beginning, the film starts off with a play staring Harry and by the end of the play another play is introduced. In the casting call for the new play directed by George, Harry shows his battle with identity. On stage, Harry yells and even throws a chair at the walls. Outsiders like Helene don’t see his battle with identity but insiders like George and Lidia do. While going over lines, Helene begins to fall for his character Stanley. Lidia says in one scene of the film, “Mother Nature at her worst. What’s going to happen to that girl discover what Harry really is? What Harry really isn’t?” Lidia wanted to give Helene some insight but not give too much away that Harry is battling with some identity issues. Though Harry tried to hide his identity issues, Helene began to grow more and more interested in him.

As the film going on, Helene and Harry spend more time together learning lines and getting to know each other. They didn’t know they were going to fall for each other. Helene discovers a little more about Harry. This dialogue gives the audience a little insight of why Harry might have some identity issues. Helene says “I bet your Mom’s a great cook huh.” Harry replies, “No, I don’t know.” Helene starts to get confused and as the conversation goes on she discovers that Harry was “found”. Harry was left on the steps of a church. This also shows that Helene is falling for him even more, though she thought in the beginning he regretted her. In my opinion love is trying to prevail between the two characters.

While making progress, Lidia still try to warn Helene of the identity problem Harry has, but Lidia does not know of the time spent between the two characters. Lidia says, “One thing you have to get set for whenever you’re in a play with Harry, is what happens after the last performance.” Helene is so confused because she thought he and Harry made some progress. Lidia adds, “Once a play is over, whatever you thought Harry was, just evaporates into thin air.” Now, Helene feels so hopeless but she develops a plan. Harry is slowly coming out of his “identity crisis” and trying to take a leap of faith. He is falling for Helene but the identity issues are still there.

At the end of the film, Helene messes up a little but she made up for at the end of the play. Helene thought she did something wrong because Harry leaves after the play. Helene thought it was something she did until George clears is up. Helene runs after Harry to basically explain how she is really shy and give him the key element [Romeo and Juliet]. From there the two begin to practice and go over lines and their love begins to grow. By the end of the film, Harry proposes to Helene and found his true self.

In conclusion, in life we face many ups and downs especially when it comes to relationships. In Who Am I This, Harry was a shy and insecure person due to his upbringing. He begins to develops identity issues. Then along comes Helene and helps him through his idently issues and helps him find himself and love. When you’re young, you develop many different insecurities about yourself and it reflects when it comes to be involved with someone of interest. We tend to think we are not worthy or unattractive, but in Helene and Harry’s case Helene did not know Harry was insecure and shy until after the play ended and Helene thought it was rejection. But Harry was just as interested in Helene as she was him. Once the two were on the same page and keep the insecurities aside they fell madly in love with each other. One book [William’s Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet], can bring two people together and make all the rain go away.
