In the article “15 years after 9/11-have we said goodbye to carefree,” Paul Fadelli describes how progressed the world is becoming with protection because of events such as terrorist acts, as well as how seeing this protection is becoming normal. Fadelli depicts his first-hand experience of the effects of terrorism in the article, which presents his thoughts to the older generation of Americans. Government officials are working to make America better for the public. They are working to improve the defense system here and overseas, but the government does not know when enough is enough. Fadelli writes this article to inform the readers about what this country used to be like and the events that have taken place that changed the worlds view. Although 9/11 was tragic and American people no longer have a carefree mentality, society is working to solve all these issues of today’s society.
To begin, Fadelli shows different methods to create credibility with his readers. He has been a first-hand witness to 9/11 and he has witnessed several other countries healing after the attacks. With his detail and the way, he described the events, he establishes trust with the reader. Having first hand proof, shows the reader that the author is not making his accusations and options from something other than facts he sa with his Own two eyes Fadelli drastically describes sitting under the Twin Towers days before the terrorist attack, he describes how he was just hanging out drinking a Sierra Nevada beer. Then Fadelli goes on about how he walked back by the towers and they were just gone, all that was left was the remains. He continues to establish trust with the reader by giving really personal first-hand accounts of situations like loved ones putting pictures of victims across the streets. Not only did Fadelli eye observed these events in New York, he also experienced situations in other countries that makes his options more credible. For example, he was in France for a graduation trip for his child and it was the time of the year when soccer was really widespread, so there would be huge crowds of people in certain areas at one time due to the sport.
During this time the police were everywhere, he explains, and his daughter started to count them; she saw so many. He used these examples to explain the problem, and show solutions, as well as improve his credibility. Fadelli aims to prove his trustworthiness so he can influence the older generation to share their stories and his stories to prevent this from happening again. Reading the article, Fadelli concentrates on several emotions to appeal to the older audience. He focuses on sadness to hit home with the reader. By targeting an older audience who were around during this time of events, Fadelli could possibly either inform them or redirect their opinions to also encourage spreading the information to younger generations to keep the memory alive. Fadelli describes the events with such detail that it makes the reader feel like they are actually experiencing these events as well. He goes into detail about walking down a street in New York and looking at all the people and their appearance.
Trying to relate to those who also experienced 9/11, Fadelli tries to bring more attention to when the problems started. He explains that before 9/11 the country and the world were not on their toes. He uses the word “carefree”, to describe the country, then 9/11 happened and that mentality went away. Fadelli continues going on about how America will never be the same. The pubic have accepted the fact terrorists are going to attack them, Fadelli explains. The military just has to be prepared to defend our country. It is emotional to read the way Fadelli describes the attacks on each country, for example “And we paid homage at the Place de la Republique to those slain nearby. In addition to the laid flowers, the plaza was filled with kids climbing on ropes and playing wheelchair basketball.” America will never forget how 9/11 has changed the world and with articles like Fadelli ‘s it will continue to remind them of this tragedy.
Fadelli fails to include logical reasoning to support his idea that the public cannot be carefree anymore. For example, Fadelli describes a time he was in Paris with his daughter and she pointed out how seeing a bunch of armed police was not any different from home, like it is normal. Following 9/11 there were police everywhere, and there are still everywhere today. Tragedy struck America so hard and it will continue to affect the lives of this countries people for many years to come. Other examples include like how America used to be a “free and mobile society” and it is nevertheless today but with way more restrictions. Politicians, Military, and many more signed up to take part in the duties and responsibilities of the country and to take caution of the citizens each and every state encompasses. Fadelli appeals mainly to those who have experienced watching the news or being in New York at this time. He also wants to continue to inform all the generation from here on out. It is proven that if a situation is made aware, the likelihood of it happening again is rare because, most people aim to prevent it.
Fadelli insists, “… public officials are finally beginning to acknowledge that the American public will have to live with occasional terrorist incidents.” As a country they do not want to have terrorist attacks but they excepted the fact that they are going to happen. So, they are working to better prepare the country and those who fight to defend it. Fadelli uses heavy amounts of Pathos and Ethos to appeal to the reader but he lacks in logical knowledge to support his claim. Further, Fadelli uses his tone and vocabulary to support his idea that America may never be carefree again. Fadelli recognizes that his audience being an older generation. Therefore, he uses a mature vocabulary, but at the same time it is easy to understand. For instance, he uses words like “perceptive” and “smoldering” to inform the readers of his credibility.
In addition, Fadelli uses relatively the same tone throughout the article and remains a constant focus on the problem and possible solution. He is a little option based because of the things he experienced it was mostly first-hand accounts. Fadelli works to establish a very informative article to help the reader understand all the issues and go beyond him to create solutions. Fadelli believes that being a carefree nation may have been great at the time but regarding the circumstances now the country needs to heal. Overall, he feels that as a country we are going to have to accept the fact that terrorists are going to attack and we just have to build up our defenses. Fadelli believes the nation should demonstrate these defenses that keep Americans safe now that it has been fifteen years since the 9/11 attack. Speaking from experience I do not remember what is it like to be in a carefree nation. I was born justa few years before any major terrorist attacks have happened and it has just gone downhill since. Fadelli does not want these issues of today’s society to go unnoticed. Just like other major terrorist attacks or huge world changing events they will go down in the history books so students can learn about these things for years to come in hope they do not reoccur.
In conclusion, Fadelli feels that the nation has been struggling, and he has proven he wants to fix that. Even though I was three years old when the terrorist attack happened. I understand that we need to be informed of what goes on in the world so things do not repeat itself. I have learned about 9/11 every year in school ever since I can remember and now I am hearing more about it in college, and it feels more real than ever before. I hope that everyone continues to bring up this event every year for the rest of mankind so that it never goes unnoticed. It is an important event that does not need to be forgotten because it permanently changed the country and will continue to do so in many more ways.
