These past few days have seen the thermometer dip to some of the lowest recorded temperatures that have been seen for decades. There is no doubt Father Winter has it out for the Northeast with the sub-zero windchill, snow, and ice. Despite these frigid temperatures, Winter can be a beautiful and enjoyable time of year for all as long as the proper self-care precautions to ensure that this time of year is also a happy and healthy one. Here are a few tips to make the cold time of year a pleasant time for all.

Wear Proper Clothing Outdoors

This may seem like a very straightforward and obvious tip but when temperatures hit 0° and the wind kicks up, being outside can cause frostbite. Wearing gloves and thick socks are a good way to protect extremities that are vulnerable to frostbite if spending prolonged periods outside.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

While this isn’t vital to your health this will help with some of the telltale discomforts that cold weather brings. The cold can dry out your skin and cause it to become itchy and red. This annoyance can easily be avoided by adding moisturizer to your everyday routine. Chapped and cracked lips can also be caused by the cold. Carry lip balm with you to avoid having cracked and bleeding lips.

Hydrate

Believe it or not the cold can dehydrate you just like the heat. The cold can stop people from drinking whatever which can cause dehydration and other health problems. Set a reminder on your phone to drink water or even carry a bottle around to make sure you are getting enough water.

Adjust Your Driving Habits Accordingly

It seems every other week there is an ice storm or a blizzard that makes the weatherman say “Stay off the roads!” With busy schedules, this time of year staying off the roads is not always possible. Make sure to reduce your speed if the weather is hazardous and always clear snow and ice from your car before hitting the road.

Conserve Energy

Winter and the cold in general causes our bodies to lose a lot of heat. Counteract this by staying home in front of a crackling fire curled up with a good book and a nice hot cup of soup. Activities like sledding and skiing are fun but the winter is all about being cozy inside with warm food and good company!
