When winter weather moves the fun indoors, it’s easy to catch a case of cabin fever. Before you turn to TV and junk food to cure winter woes, try playing an interactive game, creating a craft or getting a group together to star in a DIY talent show. Even when the weather outside is frightful, our winter activity list will give you plenty of delightful ways to keep kids occupied indoors.

Check out our 6 favorite ways to have indoor winter fun: From STEM to sports, we encourage girls to take the lead in whatever field interests them. What better way to overcome winter boredom blues than a fun science experiment? With this snow slime recipe, girls will feel like they’re playing with the real thing. Snow slime only takes minutes to make and can be stored in the fridge for an added icy-cool feel.

Have girls look through the directions and even let them show you how to make slime. Follow these simple instructions from Little Bins for Little Hands! At Girls in the Game, we host talent shows during our Summer Camp sessions and throughout our other programming. Performing is a great way for girls to build confidence and learn to take risks. But you don’t need an organized plan or a big audience to put on your own show!

Pro tip, if a girl is nervous or shy: stuffed animals make great spectators—they’re easy to impress! Girls can even take the lead and decide who will play the host and who will star as the performers. Just like that, you’re encouraging girls to build self-esteem while having fun! For example, check out this video of a Girls in the Game participant showing off her opera skills. She performed for the first time on stage as a middle school camper at our talent show, and is now studying Vocal Performance in college! Watch the video, here! Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned dance party? Have girls coach you on how to do the latest dance moves while they play their favorite songs.

We always love tying in an educational element and this one is fun. Try a game of “Freeze Dance.” Whenever the DJ stops the music, everyone has to freeze. Get creative with when you start and stop the beat; you will get caught in some pretty hilarious mid-move poses! It’s a great way to get girls out of their comfort zone and let them be silly. Even as the temperature goes down, it’s still important for kids to get their heart rates up!

Yoga is a great way to stay active without having to go to the gym. In programming, we introduce girls to yoga with a game called “Zoo Statues.” To help remember all the different animal named yoga poses, girls make animal noises as they breathe. For example, if they’re doing cat pose and cow pose, they will inhale into cat pose with a big meow and exhale into cow pose with a loud MOO!

This activity makes yoga fun while also allowing them to build their own creative exercise routines.Visualizing your goals can help motivate you to achieve them. In this activity, girls will make a list of their hopes, goals and dreams. To make sure your goals are achievable, use the SMART goal method. This is a great activity to learn about the importance of commitment and goal setting. Make sure to put your goals in a place where you can see it and be reminded of those things you strive to be and do.
