Water quality is the characteristics of water, such as physical, chemical, biological, and radiological. Water quality is very important, if your water quality is bad or do not meet the state requirements, then it may cause a health risk. Water quality can be measured for many different things. Things like PH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, and salinity can be measured in water.
All of these different things can be measured in by just even taking samples of water and following directions on a sheet (if done the right way) depending on what method you use for measuring. You can measure water quality characteristics in different ways. You can measure water using filters, meters, sensors, and even by a piece of paper that changes colors when dipped into water. These tools are very helpful when trying to figure out the measure of a certain type of chemical. Although some qualities may both use sensors or meters, you can not use the same type of machine for, let’s say measuring turbidity and PH levels. Even if you are not measuring drinking water you still have to care about the quality of lake or pool water.
Yes, even pool water is important. You may ask yourself “Why?”. Well think about it this way, if you were going to take a swim in the highly acidic neighborhood pool your eyes and skin would be irritated and you would have a high risk of a skin rash and may even have to go to the hospital.
What is PH? PH is the measure between acids and bases. In the ocean if your PH levels are too high or too basic, the fish be be badly injured. If the PH levels are too low or acidic, the result of this may be that fish start to disappear and more mosses grow. Also clogged gills and possibly even death, but the highest risk for highly acidic water could be for female fish because the might not be able to make eggs. Some examples of acids are lemon juice, soda, and vinegar. Some examples of bases are soap, cleaning products, and baking soda.
Salinity is the amount of salt in the ocean or water. Salinity in measured in PPT (Parts Per Thousand). Salinity affects plant growth and soil physical properties. In the ocean, the farther you go down into each zone, the less salt there will be. There will be less salt because the deeper you go into the ocean, the less evaporation occurs so there will be more water to balance out the salinity levels and the amount of water.
