Assessment Evaluation
The two types of assessments that was chosen for this evaluation are attitudes and functional skills. In addition to the assessments, the type of tools that are selected are assessments selection checklist and test evaluation forms. Assessment selection checklist is a constructed aid for professionals to select assessments and a tool that can be used in the development of learning outcomes that best meet the needs of clients. Text evaluation forms is a descriptive indication of technical features and practical features of the assessment process.
Within attitude assessment, the Leisure Satisfaction Measure (LSM) indicates whether a client’s general needs are being satisfied through leisure. It measures six main areas: psychological, educational, social, relaxation, physiological, and aesthetic. These factors are used to determine how well a client is performing in each of these areas. LSM is assigned with the assessments selection checklist tool in the evaluation. Furthermore, Therapeutic Recreation Activity Assessment, which is also known as TRAA, is consisted of 4 distinct components that will be score the client’s overall ability and is paired with the test evaluation form. These assessment forms are used to evaluate the client’s performance in therapy sessions.
The modality that will be reference is expressive art. It is use among patients for their ability to create a sense of harmony, or even in the use of client’s expression to express themselves in art form. Painting and drawing are two forms of expressive art which can be used by clients to express emotions and thoughts in a therapeutic way. In addition, the use of the expressive arts multiplies the effectiveness of therapy sessions and best provides clients with their needs and wants. Within the modality, the population that would benefit from these assessments are clients with functional loss and moderate to no cognitive impairments in group homes or facilities. The results of the assessments will be used to determine if there is a need for further research into these specific populations. The purpose of this was to evaluate whether there is a need for additional research on the use of cognitive impairment in clients with functional loss.
Leisure Satisfaction Measure
Evaluating with the assessment selection checklist, I had found that most of the checklist of LSM were yes which indicated the assessment is appropriate. LSM is able to identify for a number of reasons why it is appropriate for expressive arts, it’s population and setting to some extent. First, it was able to identify the most important factors that could affect the appropriateness of using this assessment. The validity and reliability review shows the extent to which the information is reliable. It is a high reliability that went through extensive critiques and reviews which was approved by the board of education. This is an important component in the quality assurance process and can be used to evaluate therapists’ confident level with their results.
Second, depending on the concerns of the facility, program, population, staff, and administration, the level of extreme technical knowledge can range. Third, LSM does not follow all the content checklist. This assessment does not include the yes and no question format, however, it does include a rating format from one to five which indicate the a type of close-ended questions among the clients. One positive aspect of LSM is that it a good beginning level for therapist to use to know their clients and to plan programs that can meet their needs as well. As previously mentioned,it is appropriate for the modality population to some extent. Even though it does not follow all the assessment selection checklist, it is important to notice leisure satisfaction through clients if their needs are being meet with expressive arts.
Therapeutic Recreation Activity Assessment
On the contrary, the second assessment that I chose is the Therapeutic Recreation Activity Assessment (TRAA) and the test evaluation form assessment tool. It turns out to be a good assessment, but it does not evaluate the appropriateness to the extent of the modality, population and setting. However, TRAA does evaluate functional ability. The purpose with this assessment to obtain measurements of the client’s basic functional skills in a group setting. The assessment measures ordinal scales for how often clients demonstrates a wide range of functional abilities making it very useful for measuring changes in a client’s performance in fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social behavior, expressive communication, receptive communication, and cognitive skills. TRAA is able to identify for a number of reasons why it is appropriate. The first reason is the validity (nature of evidence) for TRAA. Through the assessment tools, it was established by an expert panel review of persons working with the populations and by the review of an expert in assessment measures. In this case, the experts were trained to evaluate the assessment content.
Secondly, the technical features and practical features was established throughout the evaluation. The assessment shows the ease of administration that professionals that can use this assessment. In addition, the test evaluation tool shows that the administration of TRAA is also specific with procedures. I believe this is where the extent of the evaluation comes in. This assessment is appropriate but it is specific based content as previously mentioned. Not all population can do the activities, however, the most important viewpoint is modality of the activities and steps of the assessments. Expressive painting could be an activity that shows and demonstrate functional ability, but the assessment mention a complete distant activity which mostly involve crafts. Additionally, the ease of scoring is considered of the TRAA form which has six subsections of client’s functional ability and four subsections that relates to the client’s scores and the development intervention plan.
Conclusion: Pros and Cons
Both of the types of assessments and the methods used to assess them are very important. There is a lot of difference between the two, but they are all very similar in that they have different purposes. The assessment tools for each type of assessment are: 1. Assessment selection checklist and 2. Test evaluation forms. While indicating its content, there are some positive aspect of both assessments. The first one is that it helps utilities the purpose of the modality (expressive arts) and its population. It is appropriate to an extent for clients with functional loss and moderate to no cognitive impairments within a setting of a group home or facility. The second positive thing is that it allows therapist to be able to use their own decisions comfortability and confidently. These assessments can determine that purpose. Overall, both of the assessment is appropriate for the population, setting and modalities.
