Write about an occasion when your friends supported you in a difficult situation and explain what you learnt from it. I was fourteen when I first experienced true kindness. I first met John at the first-year orientation in our school. He was someone I had looked up to and we became as thick as thieves after one special incident.. He supported me when I was in a difficult situation and even until today, I can still remember this incident clearly and this memory will forever be vividly etched in my mind.
It happened when I first came to secondary school. A poindexter I was when I first joined the school. My face was covered by my thick-rimmed round glasses and books were the only things that I carried and my bag weighed like bricks. Unlike my classmates, I always bring more textbooks than needed so as to study while having breaks in between classes. I often score the highest marks in my class for all the subjects and soon, I met with a few bullies who would constantly pick on me and try to get me to do their homework.
Being weak and frail, I had no choice but to help them do their homework. They would also bring me to a secluded area of the school and threaten me that if they did not get A’s for their worksheet, they would hurt me. Everytime they did this, I would be crying and accepting everything that was going to happen. I had no courage to resist and in the end, I would always have to burn the midnight oil trying to complete their homework on time.
Dread and distress had slowly engulfed me. My grades started to deteriorate and slowly I failed all my other exams, and soon the teachers all seemed to notice. However, I was afraid that if I told anyone about my situation, the bullies would hurt me. So, I suffered in silence. Knowing something was wrong with me, John decided to check on me to find out what was happening. Mustering all my courage, I decided to confess to John about my experience with the bullies.
“WHAT?! You should have told me in the first place. Remember that’s what friends are for.”, John said. Hearing those words from him made me realised his friendliness and warmth towards me. Upon that day, any bullies that tried to come towards me were being scared away by John with his zealous behaviour. In the end, John started to do things with me such as studying and having lunch together.
Before I knew it, I warmed up to his happy demeanor and we soon became close friends. He assisted me when I was in my most vulnerable state and I am so thankful. From the incident, I experienced true kindness and learnt that true friends will stick with you till the end no matter what. I also learnt to cherish every moment I had with him as true friends don’t come by easily. Even though up to this day, I still cannot believe he decided to step forward to be my voice, and I am glad he did, or else we could not have the friendship that we developed now.
