Sports psychology is the branch of sports science and involving the science of psychology to improve the performance of the players during the training or actual game situations. Similarly, it is defined as a branch of sports science that, attempts to study players’ behavior during the training and actual game to analyze, explain, adjust, alter or predict players’ behavior through various psychological means (Ikulayo,1990). Likewise, Vipene (2005) defined sport psychology as a science that deals with the emotional aspects of the physical performance of the athlete during their sport involvements. According to Vipene,(2007)the science of sports psychology does end with the athlete on the training or the field of play only, but also it is necessary to other aspects of player’s interaction with the societies with the major concern of producing competent and better athlete to the country. The Role of Sport Psychology in the Development of Football. Sports Psychology plays a significant role in the achievements of the nations sporting objectives, by producing confidant and competent football players to the country, one of the foremost responsibilities of the sports psychologist is working on the behavioral control of the athlete to enhancement or maintain the performance of players through the modification of adverse situation into a good opportunity to the future success of the team and individual athletes.
Similarly, the club sports psychologists are working on the emotional conflict of each individual and the needs of the individual athlete, which makes him take decisions that are crucial to success or failure during playing the game of football. According to Ikulayo’s (2003) investigation, the major advantage of having a sports psychologist in the club is control and caught up while the disaster is coming into the club that can potentially affect the performance of the players during the actual game situation and/or training. Thus the effective application of different psychological principles before, during, and after the training and actual game, situation helps to enhance the performance of players in the competitions. Therefore, the presence of sports psychologists is essential to the enhancement of player’s performance by assisting them to block out stress, discouraging self-doubts, avoidance of negative imagery and inhibitory self-statements, loss of self-efficacy in athletic competitions which may impair the performance of the players.
Mental preparation is also taken up by the psychologist; this involves according to Adedeji (1987) our understanding of those factors that yield a lot of influence on the athlete. These are social status, the home, the economic background, their religious setting, physical tolerance, moral background, social status, and value system in the society. Sports psychology also enhances communication amongst athletes and officials. This may also involve interpersonal communication among teammates, coaching staff, opponent players, and others in the sports arena. In this regards, the communication ability of women’s football players in Ethiopia with the coach, opponent players, referees, and spectators are problematic and needs psychological treatment to the individual athletes which may help to restore the athlete’s confidence and develop positive mental attitudes towards the inconvenient situation to the improvement of players communication ability with others, if he is not confident in himself or herself the communication become to suffering (Adedeji, 1987)
