Health nowadays is developing in the new age of technology. Apps on the iPhone or Android are becoming more popular in the health community, and more and more people are relying on theses to get better from illnesses or mental disabilities. But when people begin to rely on these apps to the point where doctors and therapists are no longer involved, it becomes a problem. People with these apps tend to not feel the need to talk to a doctor, and can’t help by themselves. While some health apps may be helpful, that does not mean you can avoid contact of a doctor, “The therapy process – which invites another human being to know and hold the most intimate parts of one‘s self – requires two minds that can feel think and love”.

You need to be in contact with people who know what their doing, such as doctors, or therapists. The can help you more than any app can. Apps could help keep progress with things like pills or medicine, but it can‘t actually produce such things. You would have to visit the pharmacy or the hospital anyways to get such things, and then you’ll have to be in contact with a doctor. Even if you do somehow get the medicine without consultation of a doctor or pharmacist, “Apps allow these individuals to imagine everything is under control, that no attachment to a live human is necessary to untangle the mental illness” (Atlas 1), You still need to talk to people.

Apps will shelter you off, and eventually, just make it worse. The sooner you talk to a doctor, the better off you‘ll be. Apps help people stay fit, or remind them to take medicine This can help someone who IS in touch with a doctor. It can help them become better, but only if used properly. Some would say that “Good apps enable patients to receive support outside of brick-and-mortar clinics and their real world environments – no longer constrained by office hours” (Ben-Zeev 1). But with no guidance, these apps could also be the bane of the patient, giving them a false sense of security. Some people with severe mental illness could use certain apps that pertained to them. For example, “…when individuals with schizophrenia used a treatment app we developed called Focus, the majority had fewer symptoms of psychosis and depression”.

If an apps if specifically made for a certain group of people who have mental disabilities, then it couldn’t hurt to have the extra help. Of course, you still need the help of a doctor, but the more help, the better. Overall, if a medical app is used properly, and with the assistance of a doctor, these apps could very well help the medical field. However, the bad outways the good. They give people false confidence, and then they feel that they don’t need to talk to a doctor. You would just be better offjust doing it the old-fashioned way.
