Being an American means being part of a nation that allows for many freedoms, maintains a unique identity, and deals with numerous issues of uncertainty. An American has admirable character traits, such as bravery and determination. Being American, we have certain freedoms like freedom of speech and religion. Since America is still growing and is in the middle of a time where it must make difficult decisions. The bravery of the American people was evident at the Boston Tea Party. This is an example of bravery because the people in America were rebelling against an established tax that they had to pay on any tea that came out of England.
This was a demonstration of their bravery because they were taking a great risk by going onto ships and taking tea that was not theirs. Without these people standing up for what they believe in, I would not have the freedoms I have right now. The determination of the American people has been shown at the site of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. While we have made that site a memorial to all of the people that lost their lives in this tragic event, we are also rebuilding the World Trade Center as a center of commerce. In rebuilding the World Trade Center we are showing other countries that we are determined to move forward after such a tragic event.
As a visitor to the memorial site, I felt a sense of sadness yet a great sense of pride that we are able to rebuild this area. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.” (US Const. amend. I). The first Amendment of the United States constitution says that we have the freedom to practice any religion. In China, there are only five religions that are officially recognized, all other religions are illegal. Even the state approved religions have many laws and restrictions. I am grateful to be able to practice my beliefs in any way that I want. I am also able to express myself freely without fear of being prosecuted by the government. In North Korea, the people can be put in prison or executed for speaking out against the government. In both China and North Korea, access to the internet is restricted and monitored. Even though this country is a great place to be, it is not without its faults.
There is continual disagreement between the President and Congress on the federal budget. Many government workers could lose their jobs as well as government programs may be cut if a compromise is not made on the budget. I feel that having a working budget is important for this country to function properly, just as my father manages my family’s budget. The President feels that we should respond to the Syrian government attacking its own people while Congress does not agree. As someone approaching selective service age, it seems to me that we should hold off on war with Syria until further evidence is found to support the evidence of the use of chemical weapons.
Over the course of history, the values of bravery, determination, and freedom, have been the hallmark of what it means to be an American. We have seen how an American is brave and determined. The American people have had the rights to the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech. Even though the American people have shown all of these great qualities, there are also issues that need to be resolved creating uncertainty about our future. Still, the American people will be able to overcome all these obstacles because of the great qualities they show.
