Racism is a very prevalent theme throughout American history, since the beginning of time people have been discriminated, taken advantage of, even now when we as a civilization have made so much progress in the right direction and we still see it happen, sadly racism still lives on through old school values and such.
Racism in America has been commonplace since Columbus set foot here. Legal and social privileges were given to white Americans but were not given to all others. European Americans particularly also known as White Anglo-Saxon Protestants (WASPS) were given special privileges in things like education, citizenship, voting, and were often given an upperhand in court. However, non-Protestant immigrants from Europe like Irish people and Italians, often suffered racism and other forms of color-based discrimination in our society anywhere from 1800-1900. In addition, Middle Eastern people didn’t seem very welcome either like the Jews and Arabs,. Many of them have faced continuous discrimination in the USA, Asians have similarly faced racism in America.
When columbus arrived to America he was welcomed by the Native Indians. Later, you know the story, many of the indigenous people were taken advantage of. they were assimilated into British culture and educated to walk and act like British men and women. As the product of Columbus’ new America, the Natives were forced to follow European form of government and law.

Natives are discriminated against lots of time they were seen as inferior due to lack of knowledge or primitive use of fire, since columbus had seen back where he had come from the british had used things like boats and more sophisticated technology than the natives. Containing the Indians was also seen as a huge nuisance to the colonizers. Plenty of times, kind of like what we see today with African people, Natives would get in trouble for crimes and face severe punishments, but when a white person committed the same crime they would have a very minor punishment or none at all. A lot of the everyday struggles that Natives had to suffer through included internment camps, being beaten for not speaking english, cutting their hair off that was used as a sign for showing there Native pride, and getting rid of their feathers Etc. Racism was since then banned in the 1900’s, and as time goes on it is increasingly looked down upon and as our would changes the problem is getting closer and closer to being resolved racism still exists and is prevalent. Now a days we still see racial profiling in the workplace, in public, schools, and by the police force, and court systems.
During the past couple of years America has gone through a huge change and a lot of injustices’ have come to light due to things like technology and shows things like police brutality and how ethnic minorities are truly treated in america. On the other hand tho we also get to see what is inside the mind of traditional old school racist person. Our wave went from our election president Obama when lots of Americans thought that that the U.S. had finally entered a post racial era we just didn’t understand that that all it did was silence and conceal the voices of raging racists from all over the world. Later President Trump would be elected to be president and we get to see what was still happening in the states.
Since the election of Trump we have seen a rise crimes against minorities and a spike in police brutality and also plenty of awareness on social media. Racism has become systematic, not only just treating somebody blatantly because of their color but people are treated differently because of the influence of our leaders and so on, it can be way more subliminal and affects plenty of lives.
Systematic racism can be seen in our schools, in life, in court etc. it is based of things like kids who are born into poor neighborhoods do not get very good educations and most of these kids just happen to be black and the government does not give any help to these kids or to there families.In court a black man can be prosecuted to a bigger punishment for the same crime as a white person, and even though it isn’t obvious, statistics are showing an alarming truth.
According to a study, a wealth graph shows that White Americans have 90% of the wealth in our country which is a huge gap and proves a divide between races. And a huge contributing factor is unemployment. The unemployment for Blacks is two times higher than a white persons. Another contributing factor is the fact that a lot of whites have higher paying jobs, meanwhile minorities are given lesser jobs and live a lesser lifestyle than their counterparts.
A huge contributing factor to systematic racism isn’t just the education that America offers to young african Americans. Alot of kids defy the odds but a study shows that even though a black man might have the same exact resume as a white man counterpart he is 50% less likely to get the job. Furthermore tons of guest review websites like “AIRBNB etc. have black people at a lower rating consistently”, according to studies shown in, Ben and Jerry’s. These trends continue through low economic phases of American history. This shows that even during desperate times Americans still wont settle with letting blacks into their workplace.
Black people are even more likely to be imprisoned for crimes there white counterparts are often not held accountable for. A study shows that although black kids only make up 18% of pre-school, what should be a racism free zone, 50% are thought of to be suspicious. They are also twice as likely to be tried as adults and when they are in adulthood they make up almost half of americas inmates while being less than 20% of the population in America.
Most of the world has heard about the Crack epidemic, Flooding the hood with coke has shown negative impacts on the people there. Studies read, “Black people are 20% more likely to be convicted when caught with the drug, also when they are convicted they are usually convicted to 20% longer than their white counterparts.” Many advocates want legal drugs, as many argue some drugs aren’t as harmful as they may seem, this would allow the government to cash in on drugs while ethnic minorities.
