Introduction

Alcohol is the most common and popular drug in many countries. It is undeniably true that alcohol is widely consumed here in the Philippines may it be in parties, fiestas or any celebration that you can think of. One of the reasons for it maybe because of the Spanish colonizers not only brought with them the Roman Catholic religion but also carry with them their culture about drinking. There is a positive view of alcohol among Filipinos, but there is a growing concern about the impact of drinking on our society especially on the youths nowadays.

As the islands of the Philippines become more urbanized, this caused the growing reliance of the youth to the alcohol consumption that helps them deal with their stress. Underage Drinking is quite rampant and relevant these days as many youths are engaging into this kind of activity and year by year it is fast growing which is really concerning. It is caused by several problems There are several problems caused by underage drinking; furthermore, this is a serious disease. Most teenagers have a great record of underage drinking compared to young people 20 years ago. There are more accidents and deaths now as a result of underage alcohol consumption.

First of all, alcohol causes many problems for our society nowadays. Alcohol has been used throughout history for various reasons. According to the medical Encyclopedia, alcoholism is an illness marked by drinking alcoholic beverages to excess. As long as alcohol consumption is not at a level that interferes with physical health, it is not a problem. There are two types of alcoholism: dependence and abuse, however, both of them could cause many problems in society. Alcoholism has a large effect in youth, there are more than 10.4 million young people between ages 12 to 20 who suffer from it.

Second, the difference between social drinking and alcohol has changed a lot over time. Now alcohol abuse has become teenagers’ focus. In addition, they don’t have control over how much they drink. They might want to attend social events that only involve alcohol, or they can’t enjoy themselves. Going to a bar or making a drink after coming home from work becomes more important than connecting with friends and family. These days, alcohol might be the way to avoid painful feelings or troubled relationship. As a result, teenagers might resort to dangerous behavior, like driving while drunk, or they may even exhibit violent behavior.

This study is about the causes and effects of underage drinking for alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Many young people are experiencing the consequences of drinking too much, at too early an age. As a result, underage drinking is a leading public health problem in this country. Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings. Yet drinking continues to be widespread among adolescents, as shown by nationwide surveys as well as studies in smaller populations. The fact that so many Filipino youths drink alcohol is a real worry because of its negative effects.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer the following questions:

  • What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:
  1. Age
  2. Sex
  3. Grade Level and Section
  • What is the impact of Underage Drinking to the respondents in terms of:
  1. Emotional/Mental well-being
  2. Social well-being
  3. Academic Performance
  • Does a family member or a peer influence a learner to drink alcohol?
  • What are the disadvantages and advantages of Underage drinking?
  • What are the causes and effects of drinking alcohol at a young age?

Significance of the Study

This study aims to know the causes and effects of underage drinking of Junior High School in St. Michaels College Basic Education Department that commits in drinking alcoholic beverages. This study is also a source of information to the parents to know the background of their children and to understand better their offspring. This study is a great help for parents so that they will become a much more responsible parent. Through this study, the parents, would know the reasons of their children of why they engage on underage drinking. The researchers gave distinction to everyone who benefited as it follows.

  • To the Administrator, Teachers and Staffs:

That the school as the second home of the students should be aware of the drinking problem of their learners and therefore, should find mean to address the problem.

  • To the Guidance Counselor:

That there should be more activities that would help and motivate the students to open up about their problems.

  • To the Respondents:

The researchers will be able to know the reasons in engaging underage drinking and can find a solution to escape to this kind of activity. Students engaged in drinking liquors must realized and accept that they need help. They must submit themselves to counseling in school either in groups or individually with or without parents. Supported groups like family, school and friends were very important to give them stability in their individual ad family lives.

  • To the Students:

That instead of hanging out with friends who are known to be a liquor drinker they should engage themselves into more constructive activities like studying and that they must realize that drinking alcoholic beverages is not an answer to any problem.

  • To the Future Researchers:

That they may be helped and guided awith this information we have thoroughly researched in relation to the study and that they may set as a good example for them to be motivated to conduct a study and its importance.

Scope and Delimitation

This study courses to know the students who engage into underage drinking and their reasons among junior high school students of St. Michael’s College Basic Education Department, Iligan City S.Y 2018-2019. The selected junior high school student will be given a questionnaire that could be answerable by choices. We will only focus among the students who answered or admitted that they commit to underage drinking.

However, the researchers did not include the grade school pupils for there are too innocent to know this kind of activity. The researchers will only conduct their study within St. Michael’s College, Basic Education Department, located in Brgy. San Miguel, St. Mary Street, Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, Philippines and does not go beyond other places.

Definition of terms

To ensure better understanding to this study, researchers listed terms that were used in the study. The following terms were defined conceptually and operationally.

Academic Performance the performance of a certain student in school, may it be in skills or dedication in studies.

Alcohol is a drink that contains a substantial amount of ethanol (informally called alcohol), a depressant which in low doses causes euphoria, reduced anxiety, and sociability and in higher doses causes intoxication (drunkenness), stupor and unconsciousness.

Alcoholism also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a broad term for any drinking of alcohol that results in mental or physical health problems.

Behavior the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.

Culture social behavior and norms found in human societies.

Gratification pleasure, especially when gained from the satisfaction of a desire.

Psychological related to the mental and emotional state of a person.

Underage too young to engage legally in a particular activity, especially drinking alcohol or having sex.

Peer a person who is equal to another in abilities, qualifications, age, background, and social status.

Peer Pressure influence from members of one’s peer group.

Propensity the fact that someone is likely to behave in a particular way, especially a bad way.
