People with disabilities have extremely hard times doing things we find easy. People used to not desire these people but now things are changing for the better. For most of history, people who were disabled were simply cast out of society as freaks and idiots, people did not realize that these people can also achieve great feats. It is sad that only very recently has the wider population started to recognize these people as human beings. People with disabilities should not be treated as mindless animals, but as equals to us.

Overcoming Adversity – In the early 20th century people with mental disabilities were referred to as “retards” which was meant to offend them. People never bothered to help them but simply cast them out into the streets like stray dogs and cats. Abuse against these people was especially bad in the 1950’s when Eugenics reached a height in popularity.

The disabled were sterilized and some even euthanized just because they were disabled. Being disabled for most of the time has been a pretty grim living, but in the ’60s things changed. Things like the civil rights movement gaining success in the south during its sort of apartheid era, the Western public demanding NATO and EU forces be pulled out of Vietnam.

It was a very progressive time, an extremely unusual thing for the early half of the 20th century. Suddenly, however, on  20 July 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics, unlike the Paralympics, the Special Olympics is for those with mental disabilities. One of these athletes is Matthew Williams has competed in several sports, and played international basketball representing Canada, all this even though he has a mental disability.

Matthews’ case just proves that any of the disabled individuals in the world can overcome overwhelming odds and persevere just as well as the rest of us. Matthew and others like him have achieved these goals and been able to live better lives as a result. And with the political tones towards these people shifting in a positive light hopefully soon there will be more opportunities for those with disabilities to have that chance to overcome the odds stacked against them and live better lives overall.

Overall, people with disabilities shouldn’t be treated as lessers but as equals, because they all have the chance to be like us and ultimately better. People like Matthew who have been able to overcome these adversities have shown us that they can be stars like of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Mentioning things like these are important to spread awareness of these people so we can help them and open up doors and windows for opportunities for them in the future and so they can live the best lives possible.
