Self-identity is something that is a mystery to many of the greatest minds in the world. The sense of self can inadvertently help someone be more successful. According to Fargo (2015), “To give value to others, you have to begin by valuing yourself.” This quotation by Tim Fargo explains that if someone does not value themselves and their own self-identity or do not even know if they have one, then they can’t “give value to others,”. This, in turn, can cause them to not be able to find value in anything and this could cause them to not be successful. This does not mean that all successful people have a true sense of self. A sense of self is not possible without first having a self-identity. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary self is defined as “the union of elements, such as body, emotions, thoughts, and sensations, that constitute the individuality and identity of a person”.
Someone’s identity makes them who they are; without individual identities, everyone would be exactly the same. The self-consists of all of the emotions someone feels, all the thoughts they think, all of the sensations they feel, and all of the memories they have. The feelings, thoughts, sensations, and memories affect the self because they can make someone decide how to act towards certain things. The self-coincides with the personality. According to Freudian psychology, the personality consists of the id, ego, and superego. Many people disagree on whether or not the self is an illusion, which would mean that someone’s personality and everything that makes an individual an individual is not real. The goal of this research is to determine whether or not the self is an illusion. What is the self and eliminative materialism? According to the Merriam-Webster’s collegiate dictionary self is defined as “the union of elements, such as body, emotions, thoughts, and sensations, that constitute the individuality and identity of a person”. Essentially what this means is the self is the combination of everything that makes someone who they are.
The concept of the self has been a heavily argued topic in the science and philosophy fields for a long time. Some of the most influential theories on the nature of the human mind are based on the concept of self. The self is often understood by a common person like the common sense understanding of their mind, this is also often referred to as eliminative materialism. In its’ most powerful connotation it means that a person’s beliefs, wants, and other mental states used in predicting explaining and describing each other does not exist. Eliminative materialism can also be referred to as “folk-psychology”. Folk-psychology is commonly known as the ability of an ordinary person to be able to predict, describe, and explain their own and other people’s behavior and mental states. It is also not very credible.
