Do you feel homework helps you, or does it stress you out? Research shows homework actually improves test scores, whether it be on state testing or on regular chapter tests, however too much homework can lead to sleep deprivation. Research shows fifty-nine percent of students feel they have too much homework and forty-three percent feel homework helps them in some of their greatest achievements. In my opinion, homework should be given, but only to a certain extent.
Many teachers believe homework is the key to helping students prepare for tests and quizzes. However, some teachers think students need time off from studying and doing school work, so they have time to sleep. When teachers assign projects and homework, even with a month’s notice, they know we wait until the night before it is due to start it.
On top of having to do all the homework and tests they assign that night, and after school activities and clubs. For example, the week after homecoming we had the most tests and projects we have ever had. Teachers knew we had homecoming and we wanted to enjoy the weekend. Teachers should think about what they would do if they were in our shoes.
Students see homework as a pointless activity. “After a long day at school the last thing I want to do is go home and do homework. If you think about it we stay up till three o’clock in the morning finishing homework and studying for test when we should be sleeping,” Our Lady Academy student says.
Another student stated “homework makes me feel stressed and tired.” Many teachers tell us we need to go to sleep earlier and stop falling asleep in class, but what they don’t realize is that the homework they assign is the reason we are sleep deprived and fall asleep in class.
As for me, homework makes me feel dehumanized. It makes me feel stressed out and doesn’t allow me time to hangout with family and friends during the week, and sometimes even weekends. On the other hand, I do think we should have a little homework here and there, but not as much as teachers give us today.
Another assignment that provokes stress is summer reading. What is the point of summer reading? It does not teach us anything. Forcing us to read does not make us like reading, but it only makes us hate it more. Summer is not for homework. In fact, it is supposed to be a time off from school, a time to hangout with friends and relax.
However, homework does increase test scores. Therefore, we should have homework. Test scores show that students who do not receive any homework, or not enough, do not perform as well as students who do have homework.
Colleges look at your ACT scores and semester grades. Students who do not receive homework are less likely to receive scholarships then those who do receive the correct amount of homework. If I d looked at a student with the correct amount, too much, and not enough homework I would definitely be able to recognize the difference. Homework is helpful, unless too much is given.
After writing this, I have realized the importance of homework. No matter how much we do not like it and procrastinate about it we need it. We need homework in order to succeed in our future tests and jobs such as: scholarships, ACT tests, and college. It definitely is not pointless. Teachers give us homework to help us not hurt us.
