The IOM Future of Nursing recommendations are meant to address the increasing demand for healthcare services as well as improve patient outcomes in the healthcare sector (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017). One of the IOM Future of Nursing recommendations is increasing the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020. This is meant to improve the skill set required in ensuring that effective interventions are implemented and nurses are able to address the increasing complex healthcare needs (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017). This will also lead to improved performance as well as improved patient outcomes. This recommendation will be beneficial to nurses since this will lead to an improved nursing workforce, which will lead to effective collaboration with other skilled nurses. This is important since healthcare goals are as a result of team work and not solely on individual efforts (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017).

Working with other qualified nurses will also lead to an improved decision-making process, which is important in determining effective healthcare interventions. Another IOM Future of Nursing recommendation which will impact the performance of nurses is doubling the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020 (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017). A nurse who has obtained a doctorate in nursing is more skilled and enhanced in performing the nursing roles. This is because the nurse has been trained on handling complex healthcare issues, which will lead to improved healthcare outcomes (Cherry & Jacob, 2017). This recommendation will help me in interacting with more qualified nurses who have been trained to address the increasing diversity of healthcare needs. Interacting with nurses that are more skilled is important in enabling other nurses to make informed decisions (Cherry & Jacob, 2017).

This will also give me the opportunity to pursue a doctorate degree, which will help me in enhancing my nursing skills. The third IOM Future of Nursing Recommendation is ensuring that nurses engage in lifelong learning, which will positively impact all nurses by providing them with the opportunities to enhance their nursing skills (Cherry & Jacob, 2017). Due to the changing healthcare needs, it is important for nurses to continuously improve their nursing skills, which will also lead to improved patient outcomes (Cherry & Jacob, 2017). The nursing curriculum has also been continuously revised to provide up to date information based on the current healthcare trends. Ensuring that nurses engage in lifelong learning will also enable nurses to stay up to date with the current healthcare trends that are meant to improve the provision of healthcare services (Cherry & Jacob, 2017).

Options in the Job Market Based On Your Educational Level

Increasing my level of education will give me a competitive advantage in the current job market. This is because having a higher level of education will provide important skills, which are necessary in improving healthcare delivery (Nalle, Wyatt, & Myers, 2010). Most of the healthcare facilities require registered nurses in new positions to possess a baccalaureate degree, which is attributed to increased performance. This will provide me with more job opportunities since skilled nurses have more opportunities in the nursing field due to their ability to perform most of the nursing responsibilities (Nalle, Wyatt, & Myers, 2010). Nurses with a higher education level are also able to address some of the complex healthcare issues, which give them a competitive advantage in the job market.

Increasing my level of education will affect my role in the future of nursing in different aspects, which include acting as a primary care giver (Nalle, Wyatt, & Myers, 2010). This is due to the increased competence level, which provides nurses with the skills and knowledge to apply in addressing complex healthcare aspects. Due to the increasing demand for healthcare services, nurses will soon be required to make critical healthcare decisions and manage patients with serious health issues (Nalle, Wyatt, & Myers, 2010). This is meant to improve patient outcomes and help healthcare facilities in achieving the desired healthcare goals and objective.
