The best starting point for understanding the topic is the 2012 YouTube document “A Place at the Table” produced by Lori Silverbush. This film shows to the viewer how three families in the United States do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. Unfortunately, the United States being one of the wealthiest nations in the world, many households are food insecure.

According to the film nearly 30% of U.S. families were classified as food insecure. Silverbush demonstrates in the film an alternative way of looking at hunger as well as obesity. For example, there is a scene where a doctor checks and asks an obese child named Tremonica. She would question her if she had breakfast in the morning, the kind of snacks and drink she drank. Tremonica responded with how she did not have anything for breakfast and the snacks and drank she consumed were chips and soda pop.

Later the doctor replies how Maybe ask your mother to start buying celery, carrots, and apples. Doctors often recommend guardians to give their youngsters nutritious food. However, parents who are food insecure are not going to grab what is healthy. A significant number of them do not procure enough money to afford to buy nutritious food. The only choice these families have is to buy processed food and junk food because it is more affordable than fruits and vegetables.

Looking further, on the website, Feeding America shows how living in a food insecurity household in the United States can be very negative to any individual. However, it is more particularly devastating among kids due to their increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences. According to the Feeding America, in 2016 there were nearly 12,938,000 food insecure children in the United States.

In addition, 80% of those parents with food insecure children were eligible for nutrition programs, only if their income was at or below 185% of poverty (Feeding America). This website also informs how a child who is food insecure and has a poor nutrition diet can instantly affect the child’s brain structure and their intellectual capacity. This data and information from Feeding America show why it is essential to care about the children who are food insecure in this nation. The people need to realize that not having a well-developed brain can damage a child’s way of learning and social interaction.

In the following article “Child Food Insecurity: The Economic Impact on Our Nation.” written by John Cook clarifies how being a child who is food insecure can have an adverse effect on a child’s cognitive development. He begins with explaining about how children in the United States go to school not eating an appropriate, healthy meal and unfavorably influencing the child’s mindset. According to an observational study, a child who is food secure has better focus and outstanding grades than the kid who experiences from food insecurity (22). This problem should be an essential issue to care about because these youngsters are the possible future of this country. If children who are food insecure keep eating processed or junk food and not nutritious nourishment, this can continually impact their psychological and scholarly improvement as they continue to get older.
