Joshua Jarboe was a great athlete and student he graduated in 2008 from Cedar cove. Entering college, Jarboe had been given a scholarship from Oklahoma to play football. The University released him from his contract, he was no longer able to play for them. With his rap and his background all over the internet there is no way another college would want to accept him. Jarboe ruined his career time after time trying to convince people that he was tough, and popular. After his Freestyle video went out it resulted in his football scholarship being rescinded.
The decision made by the University of Oklahoma was efficient and just due to prior actions in his senior year of high school. Jarboe received misdemeanor in his senior year for the possession of a weapon on school campus, however he was given a second chance. On the contrary, the video on YouTube accompanied with the misdemeanor left the University no choice but to nullify the scholarship. During Jarboe’s senior year of high school, he was charged with a felony that was later reduced to a misdemeanor. He brought a black and silver .380 caliber handgun and tried hiding it from the school police. Jarboe and his friend was caught and arrested.
Articles do not go into details about what consequences his partner faced but people know how the story ended for the all-star football player. Despite this, the University turned a blind eye and gave Jarboe a chance to prove himself. In the article “Oklahoma dismisses coveted recruit Jarboe in wake of Internet video,” ESPN sports writer Tim Griffin offered a statement from the University of Oklahoma Football Coach Bob Stoops: ‘We [The University] outlined for Josh the expectations we had for him when he arrived and unfortunately, those expectations have not been met… Josh needs to learn from this experience. We hope he can move forward in a positive manner.”

With that being said, Jarboe knew he was walking on thin ice and had a reputation to uphold. Knowing that you have already been given another chance, you would think that he’d behave accordingly, but that wasn’t the case. Still Jarboe went ahead and created a rap video about serious matters–guns and violence–something that he’d already gotten in trouble for. Other than his scarred record, the youtube video was looked down upon for other reasons, one being that gun violence in America is a serious and tender subject. The video contained threats relating to guns and shooting people. One quote from the freestyle, “Shoot you in your head and you might be dead with a halo.
So hold on, don’t beg for your life. And hold on, don’t ask please.” With so many threats and foul language that Jarboe said and wrote made, him look like a want to be thug who just wanted the fame and or to be popular, which he could have had both playing for Oklahoma. Some may disagree with the university’s decision because it can be seen as an invasion of privacy. However it is easy to side with the decision made by the university, due to Jarboe getting so many chances he should have known he was on thin ice. Frankly, Jarboe’s scholarship would have been revoked after he made the decision to bring a gun to his high school if it weren’t for the court’s decision to place it as a misdemeanor.
Jarboe put his life and others in danger when he did that, not only did he take it on campus but he also tried to hide it while on campus. Jarboe’s decision didn’t just affect him or his family but it also affected the college and the football team. The university put the school’s reputation on the line by giving Jarboe another chance because other people they were recruiting or who was on the team already would’ve thought it would be ok to make decisions like jarboe did without there being any consequences. The video was posted on a youtube account with a user name and was recorded from someone’s phone.
However, universities look at past instances to determine admission. Jarboe showed that he didn’t care about posting the video while he was still on fire. Actions speak louder than words and in Jarboe’s case, his words and actions were speaking at the same level. First, he got charged with a felony that later was reduced to a misdemeanor for bringing a gun to school. Then, he made a rap video about using guns and making threats. Maybe he really did want a full-ride scholarship, but not enough to foolishly throw it away and giving the University of Oklahoma no choice. With all of this being said Jarboe was not the right person to get a full ride scholarship an act the way he did.
The university made many attempts to help Jarboe by allowing him to get a second chance and Jarboe didn’t give any effort to keep his scholarship, So yes, it can be said that the university made the right decision to take his scholarship away many people fight to get a full ride scholarship and anyone would love to get one in this case Jarboe may have been a amazing athlete but to be a NFL player he needed to also be a role model and he was not that in this situation.
