Intelligence is considered to be wise or Einstein smart, but what people don’t realize is that it comes in many unique forms. People that have control of their body or that are human calculators are both considered intelligent in their own ways. Today’s society has pinpointed what intelligence is and that people should only be the type schools say they are, but it can surprise most people that there are close to eleven different types and several aren’t what people expect. So be your own person and figure out what type you are.

Howard Gardner is a teacher at Harvard, and has been doing different tests to see if the human race has different types of intelligence other than the types that schools tells us there is. One type that Professor Gardner says that some humans have, mostly athletes and dancers, is bodily intelligence. This type of intelligence is the perfect timing of the mind and body, both working together in perfect unison. Even though this can be seen repeatedly throughout history from the ancient samurai to the modern athletes like Jackie Robinson or Robinson Cano, most people don’t even recognize this “intelligence” for what it really is.

Jackie Robinson is flat out an amazing athlete, as seen in the movie “42” Jackie was moved from second to first base and it didn’t seem to faze him one bit, he picked up on the right foot work, fielding, bunt defense without even saying “ I can’t do this” and went right on his merry way and helped the Brooklyn Dodgers win a world series. Now on the other hand we have Robinson Cano, he wasn’t moved from position to position or the first black player in the MLB, he is just a great athlete that shines above everyone else because he makes everything he does seem so smooth like a ballerina on a dance stage performing. This might be the most mistaken kind of intelligence out there because people already have what they think is the right idea made up in their minds.

There is a type of intelligence that is the total opposite of bodily intelligence, interpersonal. Interpersonal intelligence doesn’t involve your own body and recognise what your body does but in fact studies and reacts to others people attitude and their body so they can get along as best as they can. This is the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. It involves effective verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to note distinctions among others, sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives.

One person that has this ability is Professor X. in the X-Men. He has the ability to read minds and sense what is going on around him so he can react appropriately to the situation. Another example are normal people that have been taught to read other people’s bodies. This is called kinesics, these people are professionals and can probably figure anything and everything about by the way you walk, talk, or sit.

Spatial awareness is a unique kind of intelligence; it might be called the kinesthetic learning. This type means you are a visual learner and what you see and do it will stick with you forever. For example, Tom Cruise, he is dyslexic but he is able to memorize his lines and perform them to his full potential; but because he has different techniques to learn his lines he takes lot different and unique roles. Another example is Jim Abbott; he was born without his right hand and became an amazing pitcher for the Angels, Yankees, White Sox, and Brewers. Without him being able to learn how to pitch with only one hand and transfer his mitt almost instantly in case of a line drive right back up the middle. His talent probably didn’t come easy but because he has spatial awareness he was able to overcome that disability and make something of himself.

This paper identifies only a few of the several different types of intelligence that Howard Gardner has researched his entire life. The school system that we live in tell us that there only two different types and if we don’t have those types then we are considered stupid and will go no where in life because of it. Bodily intelligence argues that even though you may not be good at math or reading certain things that you aren’t special. Interpersonal just states that there are other things that people are good at and there will probably always be a need for physiologists and people that can read others and help them because of that.

And last but not least, spatial intelligence or kinesthetic learning, you may be good at math or science but you need to be hands on or else you hardly learn a thing. Just because people tell you one thing doesn’t mean that they are wrong or right but there may be more that what they thought or want to tell you.
