A the framework that views how cultures/societies are related to the grouping of power, race, and law. It also shows how the United States has been constructed, and how the whites have privilege while people of color experience discrimination day in and day out. It’s extremely horrible knowing that people of high privilege and authority ignore inequality or see it as okay to have inequality between races and ethnicities. As a Mexican-American, I feel blessed to be able to live in such a diverse state and area like Southern California. Where all races and ethnicities coincide better than they do in other states. I have been blessed to have friends and coworkers that’s are African American, Korean, Latino, etc. Though it feels more accepting of multiple cultures in southern Cali, that doesn’t mean it’s one hundred perfect here. I have still been judged and treated differently because of the color of my skin.
I once applied for a job at a restaurant of high prestige, and felt hurt after speaking to the manager. I wanted to be Host or waiter and was looked at and asked if I had written the the right position I was applying for. When I answered yes, the manager on shift replied: “Do you even know English, or own a tie, or know how to manage money. Maybe you you should apply for dishwasher, you will be with your type of people.” I walked out and thought to myself what gave him the right to even say that about me. I feel education is key to success and if we wish to move forward and not stay in the same place then I believe that everyone should learn about race and ethnicity at an early age. That way people will be able to face it and people can be treated better. I mean it has been a problem and will keep being a problem until it has been confronted. The more people to get educated on this topic, the less injustice acts there shall be.
I have never left Southern California and even though I wish to travel to see all the other states. I see it impossible, with there being states and areas that have to a certain point views on who should and should not be in the US and with so much racism it frightens me to even want to be near those areas. Now with our president ideas and thoughts on immigrants and just Hispanic people in general, I feel its less safe to travel now than ever before. I mean let’s think about the laws and how they are enforced when comparing a Mexican and a White American.
I have witnessed and been apart of different treatments. I have seen family members get arrested, accused breaking a law or violating a rule when driving. Two days ago I had to witness in court a judge agree with a white police officer whose only evidence was his eyes against a hispanic driver. While the accused driver had physical evidence and reasoning to why the officer was wrong and lying. But at the end of the day the driver was arrested and escorted out while the officer sat with a grin. So yes, the law says that they don’t judge based off of the color of ones skin, but the truth is people of color are always arrested, given harsher sentences and always treated worse than white people. I hope one day I will get to see a glimpse of the US or just the world in general where equality exist between races and ethnicity’s. I haven’t lost hope and with the teachings of this class I hope to be able to spread positivity and help educate a little more about race and ethnicities and all the problems there are with how p.o.c are treated.
