In 1948, when this novel was based countless African Americans lost their lives due to execution from injustice. Throughout the book many decisions were made but one that really stuck out to me was where Grant got into a fight. In a “Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J Gaines, Grant made many decisions such as getting into a bar fight to defend Jefersons honor this is one of the more significant scenes in the book because Grant actually cared about what they were saying about Jefferson and he defended his honor.

Choices, Grant has made many choices throughout his life but on that stands out is his choice to get into a bar fight to defend jeffersons honor. This choice is important to the novel because in the beginning he did not care about jefferson but as it gets closer to his execution date Grant starts to care more and more. It is shown that Grant starts to care for Jefferson in the quote “Shut up” this quote may be only two words but them two words mean a lot. It all started when the two mulattoes started about how they should of killed Jefferson and Grant went over there and tells them to shut up then them three get into a fight all because Grant actually cares for Jefferson now. One other quote is “After that it was dark.”. This quote might mean nothing to some people but it actually has a great significance to the book because this is when Grant got knocked out because he was standing up for Jefferson and this represents once again that Grant cares about Jefferson.

Like Grant I have made many decisions good ones and bad ones, and one bad one that really sticks out to me in the form of a scar on my right thumb knuckle. This decision that I’m talking about is the time that I stabbed a tire that had no air in it and the knife blade folded over and sliced my finger open. My choice is somewhat similar to Grant’s because both of our decisions caused up bodily harm, my choice is different because from Grant’s because this was a self inflicted injury his was by someone else. This choice is important to my life because it taught me a valuable life lesson that uninflated tires do not cut. In an article it say that if you are going to cut a tire use a sharp knife such as a box cutter and cut into the sidewall, knowing this has made me realize my first mistake I had a dull folding knife and I tried to stab the tread part not the sidewall. Also in one other article it said to use a jigsaw to because that will cut better than a knife. Knowing this as well what I should have done is just started a little hole carefully then used a sawzall or jigsaw to do the rest of the cutting. To sum it all up, I have made decisions just like Grant did and the decisions we have made have affected us mine it left a scar and his it caused him to care about Jefferson.

In reading this novel it teaches us that you do not take life for granite because every moment is a gift. This helps us understand the lives of others and ours and how it is that they want to be treated and the way that we were treated.
