An issue that has been plaguing the nation for many years is whether to legalize abortion, certain parts of it, or none at all. People see there only being two sides to this debate: for or against. Pro-choice or pro-life. Whata lot of people don’t realize is that those two sides are not concrete in what they mean.
Pro-life people view pro-choice people as heathens who have no regard for human life. This is not true. Pro-choice people realize that women’s bodies are their own bodies to do as they please, and they also realize the risks outlawing abortion will have on the society they hve m. Back alley abortions have been around for hundreds of years. Because they weren’t-and aren’t-always performed by experienced protfessionals, the threat of losing the mother as well the child is always a poss ibility. A common protest slogan used by pro-choice people is a picture of a coat hanger and the words “never again”, the words meaning that never again should women nave to resort to self-nducing an abortion using a coat hanger or other equally as dangerous and crude of items.
Telling women who have unwanted pregnancies that they shouldn’t have had sex in the first place helps no one in the situation. America is a very diverse setting. There are a plethora of women who are young and are just starting to learn how to take care of themselves. Forcing them to carry a child to term and then raising it for 18+ years is absurd. Forcing a woman to carry a child to term then give it away is equally as absurd. Adoption procedures are incredibly lengthy in ume and the foster care system is no place for a child to go. Contraceptives are hard to come by. People have worked for years to sabotage financing for contraceptives like birth contro1, and try to limit them. WOuld you like to guess what would happen if birth control was cheap to get to every woman?
If you answered that there would be less abortions, you’d be correct. Pro-life people have been working for years to undermine funding and public accessibility to abortion clinics since Roe v Wade. A recent bill that went into effect was the one in Texas, which severely restricted availability of abortion to Texan women. It cut the number of clinics able to pertorm the procedures from 42 to 5. In Ohio, a bill was introduced (nicknamed the “heartbeat bil”) that required women wanting an abortion to listen to the heartbeat of the child. While the intent is made to be a deterrent, it could emotionally car a woman for life more than naving to nave an abortuon already aoes. People that are pro-life and are against support of birth control coverage are generally also against any type of sex education that isn’t abstinence only. While it’sa common conservative thought that nary a teenager in the grand land ot America would go past making Out, it’s highly delusional and merely impossible to believe.
Schools do not educate youth in the places that they need it the most: their reproductive organs in their own body. Thus, unwanted pregnancies show up in humans who are just kids who didn’t know any better because nobody thought it was important enough to teach them. In short, the label pro-choice is not the same as pro-abortion, and a lot of people don’t realize that. Telling women what to do with their own body, be it not having sex or not having an abortion, is internalized misogyny and needs to stop. I personally would never choose to have an abortion, but I will never condemn another woman to carry a child to term if they cannot care f the child correctly or the child’s quality of life is grim.
