That urge that one develops to enable them go through a lot of challenges and distraction just to come and persevere and finally they achieve their goals, this can be summarized by the term Grit. Duckworth tries to focus on one’s personal characters’ traits that she refers to it as grit. She goes further to elaborate grit by saying it is the act of sticking with things over a term until you master them and that is they become part of you.
Having taught mathematics at a high school, she mesmerized by how there was a group of student who could performed better than others in her math class. According to her studies she states that she spent more time thinking about something that most thought to be obvious and that was, the student who tried and worked hardest always succeeded in class as compared to those who barely worked hard it was directly reflected that they barely succeed.
According to her research Duckworth brings out the fact that in the long process of achieving a given goal, grit is required and it is as essential as intelligence. She developed a test called “Grit Scale” that enables a person to perform simple self-assessed tests on a series of 10 to 12-items. Using the Grit score which an individual gets from the test, it possible to predict one’s achievements under challenging circumstances.
In the West Point cadets who tend to attain high grit scores were more likely to succeeded in the “Beast Barracks” training program. According to the Script National spelling competitions, the grittier contestants stood a better chance to go even further in the competition. They may not have been the better speller or best speakers but just at least they may have studied longer and worked an extra mile that they should have. Her research also turns attention to the question that she had encountered severally.
That is, the effect of grit on education and the focus is on the completion. According to Duckworth, those who make it through and complete to get their degrees despite the challenge and the frustration that they may have, they are mostly the gritty. She suggests that Grit helps when college becomes hard. According to her, it is possible to learn and even embrace grit since every human quality that has been studied has proven to be affected by at least in part by a person’s environment and goes ahead and say intelligence is also included.
This can be learnt through also social interaction and this can be through associating with the gritty. One can also set a goal that is aiming to achieve, this will be though cultivating a sense of purpose in achieving a given goal. It is possible for parents to enhance grit in their children even younger siblings by setting a good example that they can emulate.
