Cyber bullying is a phenomenon that affects more and more youths every day It is also the premise of the two articles written by Nina Lakhani and Aleks Krotoski respectively. The first article treats cyber bullying like a problematic thing, even claiming that many suicide victims are a result of cyber bullying, The article shows cyber bullying as a problem, which should be given more focus than it has been shown before, as people have lost their lives over cyber bullying. The second article shows the author’s first experience with a chatroom, an AOL chatroom to be more specific, where he also experienced his first act of cyber bullying, hidden behind the virtual claws of anonymity which is also the cyber bully‘s biggest weapon. This article has a more ‘calm’ approach to cyber bullying, compared to the first article, but it is not very kind to it. The tone is still anti bullying, but instead of looking at the victims’ point of view like the first article; it looks at the bullies’ point of view from a psychological perspective.
The second article is written by Aleks Krotoski and it is about cyber bullying from the bully’s psychological point of view. The article is also written in a relaxed tone as this quote shows; “It‘s like playing a trick on Halloween; it‘s childish, it seems insignificant, and it’s kinda fun.” There are no morbid examples of suicides or cold statistics like the first article and it might seem like a wrong approach to a serious subject as this but Krotoski hits the nail on the head, as the article also includes a study from a university and a good conclusion. The article is almost like an article from a humor website like Crackedcom which is supported by quotes from the article like this; “ that Xbox Live users encounter playing online, my efforts were pretty tame 7 I didn’t question anyone’s sexuality, make any racial slurs or say anything particularly negative about anyone’s mother”.
The article is of course more serious. However, the real key to keep the reader’s interest in the article is the way Krotoski includes his own experience. The article kicks off with his own personal story and even though, it is a very short story it is enough for the reader to keep reading the article Whether or not you can relate to his story, does not always matter as it mostly is interesting to hear other peoples‘ experiences These things are the ingredients for a successful article that is sure to be read by many. The third article is written by Jan Hoffman and it is about cyber bullying and the role of the schools, because it is hard to punish a child for something that did not even (or is hard to prove) happen on school grounds. Even though, it might not seem ‘right’, the schools have a point when they say they cannot punish children for things that happened outside the school.
The school is its own institution with its own rules and practices. Everything outside the school is a free for all chaos where the students might do things that would not be acceptable inside school grounds. On the other hand, though, if an incident happened between to students who go to the same school, the school could and should do something as the students is part of the same institution where they have to show up and study for years and years to come. A problem like this is a problem which sparks many debates between two split up parties. Everyone can make a Facebook, Twitter, Google etc. profile today. In the case of Facebook, you have to be thirteen years old to sign up, but there is no control. You can just set your age to be over thirteen, even though you might be eleven or twelve. The parents do not even have to get involved and it is easy to hide your internet activities from them> unless they check your browser history or email accounts every day, which is a big hassle for many families.
While these children are roaming unsupervised on Facebook or other social media websites, they have a great chance to encounter bullying from people they do not even know or even from people they do know, just for someone’s amusement, It is a big problem that should be receiving focus on the classrooms from early ages. Cyber bullying is a relatively new thing that was not introduced until the spread of the Internet and the chatrooms that came with it, Because of this, cyber bullying is not taken as serious as physical bullying. A tweet from the rapper Tyler, The Creator is a perfect example of this as he writes; How The Fuck Is Cyber Bullying Real Hahahnha Nigga Just Walk Away In From The Screen Like Nigga Close Your Eyes Hahn Turning your screen off if you get cyber bullied will not remove the feeling of getting bullied and if you get cyber bullied by people you know, there is a good chance that they will target you in real life. There is no good escape until schools and other institutions put more focus on cyber bullying. If it has to develop into a school subject then let it.
