Every child comes from a different world which shapes who they are as an individual. One must overcome the challenges these worlds present in order to secure a better future.
I come from a family of immigrants, who came to this country to give their children a better future. Ever since a young age my parents have always stressed the importance of education. They dreamt to one day see their four children surpass their junior high education and receive a college degree. Unfortunately due to my parent’s status, they were employed in low income jobs which could not support our family; to make sure the bills were paid sacrifices were made, among these included my siblings college education.
Being stressed over finances my father turned to alcoholism. At the age of five I never knew which father would come walking through the door; a loving father or a terrifying monster that went on rampages against my mother. As much as my mother wanted to she could not take her children and escape this toxic relationship, for her salary could not support a family of five. So she remained trapped in this web of abuse.
For six years I was abused by my uncle. My Uncle came to America to help assist my family with money, with the extra income my father’s worries decreased, thus his drinking stopped. My mother was no longer in danger of the man who she wed to protect, thus I suffered in a world of silence to secure my mother’s safety.
Around the age of ten the environment which I lived in changed. My anorexia and depression brought new surroundings to my life. My environment now consisted of hospitals, where I was surrounded by the mentally. When admitted to the hospital I was in a sense relived, for this gave me the opportunity to escape my molester.
I have come from many worlds, a world with an alcoholic father and an abusive uncle, a world of hospitals surrounded by the mentally sick and finally the world I am in today. Through intense treatment I have defeated all the demons in my life; my anorexia, depression and my Uncle. I now live in a new world a world called Girls Hope, a program which assists adolescents with academic potential to receive a college education. This program has given me many opportunities including; a loving home, a four year scholarship to Rosary High school, and assistance to pay for college. Although the two other worlds I came from were not ideal, the have shaped me as an individual. Thy have made me a stronger person who dreams to be the first in her family to attend college. Without the help of Girls Hope this could not be possible, and for that I thank them.
