War, blood, guts, The poems I have chosen to compare in this essay are Wilfred Owen’s, “Dulce Et Decorum” and “My boy jack” by Rudyard Kipling. The two poem’s I have chosen to analyse are both about the first world war. The two poems have somewhat similar opinions on The Great War. My first poem, Dulce et decorum, is against the conflict and the injustice of it all. It is narrated by one of the soldiers who is fighting in the Great War and having to face the terrors of war. On the contrary, my second poem, “My boy jack”, is a poem about the death of a child.
Firstly, my boy jack’s loss would make any parent, guardian or friend cry losing someone your friends with is the worst thing that could happen. Imagine you’re a parent and your child is lost in the middle of the sea and you won’t see them ever again. This would make you feel guttered and also make you sound like a bad parent. From losing the child, you never get comfortable, this is shown in the poem line “oh, dear what comfort can I find.”
The person asking the question answers their question Through their inner consciousness, the language features through the poem were metaphors and alliteration. The metaphor throughout the poem was the word “tide” This has different meanings. It could mean the tide of the ocean and how no navy ships have been able to sail due to the tide. It could also mean the tide News coming from the navy, you could also interpret it as the word time. The alliteration through the poem was “this tide” as it was used in 6 lines. The soldier who was lost in war was John Kipling.
Dulce et decorum by Wilfred Owen main description throughout was the harsh living conditions of war that soldiers had to go through and to oppose there is no glory of you joining the army. But throughout the poem, Wilfred Owen, who wrote the poem describes how one of his comrades dies to chlorine gas and how you feel with nothing you can do to help a fallen soldier who dies right in front of your eyes. This would send shivers through your body and make you feel terrified, through that happening the thoughts in your head would be I’m next and that makes the loss in dulce et decorum effective. It uses several similes and metaphors, which add to the loss and makes it effective.
These two poems in comparison, both have the use of language features such as similes metaphors and imagery, through both of these poems the more persuasive poem is “dulce et decorum.” The poem is more persuasive as you are on the battlefield and could die at any time like one of Wilfred’s friends who died a slow death. The poem has a line “Dulce et decorum est Pro Patria Mori.” the line means “It is sweet and proper to die for one’s country” but in this poem, it is opposed by the real horrors they went through.
The authors of these two poems intentions to this day still stand as they both tell you the conditions of the battlefield. The way they convene this message is saying if your going to fight for the country is not just about the glory and you have the chance of dying. Dulce et decorum shows that it is the more persuasive poem as it shows multiple similes and metaphors through the duration of the poem. this concludes that the more persuasive poem is dulce et decorum through the way it shows the real war conditions and loss.
