For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. – Nelson Mandela
Freedom. Such a simple, seven letter word. But it isn’t as simple as it may seem. As Nelson Mandela beautifully stated, it is something that is precious, but cannot be bought. It is something that is not always seen, but felt. It is something that is singular, but can be in millions of places at once. Freedom is the ability to make your own decisions, to have your own beliefs and values. Without these decisions, beliefs, and values, we are forever trapped and unable to express our true opinions and feelings. These reasons are why freedom is what people have fought over for hundreds upon thousands of years.
In a general overview, freedom is the ability to make choices. These choices can be anything, from when to eat, what to wear, where to go, and how to spend our time. Although those are simple examples, there are more complex examples, such as a role in government and what religion you take part in. I believe that every last choice you can make is worth fighting for. Our choices make up who we are. As soon as we have our choices taken away from us, we lose track of who we are, we lose personality, we lose ourselves as an independent spiritual being. We must fight to protect and expand the freedoms of ourselves and others. If we cannot make decisions, our true potential will be suppressed.
Suppression is having your entitled freedoms and gifts of life taken away from you, forced out of your hand and into the hands of others. Is this the life we want to live, the life of one that is controlled like puppet to a puppet-master, without any future or self satisfaction? I refuse to live that life. I have goals, as does every single individual in the world. Our goals are what help us reach new heights, propel us to succeed. Our freedom is what protects those goals, those entitlements, those rights, those gifts of life.
However, we can take our freedom away from ourselves and others without even knowing it. It can be taken through things like controlling others, what they do or what they may think. We as free people need to recognize our freedom and share that freedom with others around us. As a community and nation, the gift of freedom is something that we must prize and keep close to us, something that must always be protected and fought for. Our brave soldiers are always fighting and striving to be the unspoken missionaries who spread this blessing, this inheritance. Those soldiers recognize what other people might not. Freedom is a beautiful thing. An essence that is dear to us, a presence that is wrapped in every fabric of our existence. This freedom is something I am proud of, and something that I hope you are proud of too.
