Description
In this artwork, on the middle to bottom side, there was a man who is wearing blue and khaki color shirt and pants as well as rubber-soled shoes with red gloves and khaki hat. There is color which form by blue, white, orange and a bit red color to form the paddy field. There is three birds with black color stay at the paddy field. Moreover, on the above of the artwork, there are yellow, orange, white, black and red color to form the golden wheat behind. On the foreground, there is a house with blue color wall and red-brown color of the rooftop as well as some trees behind the house. In the picture above, there is a sunset form by yellow, white and green color. Besides, there have color with green and blue on the right above side.
Analysis
According to this artwork, in the picture just above the horizon, a solar disk is displayed above the golden wheat. A man sprinkles seed on the field, as well as the sun scatters its rays in the sky. In the foreground, a tree gives a plane composition. Besides, a scorching sun circling in the yellow sky, and its thickly painted rays streak through the background. Yellow symbolized love and life itself, its infinity and mystery. The artist used all existing color such as lemon yellow, straw, gold, and ochre to create the sun. Moreover, in the middle to bottom side, the paddy field where the sower casts the new seeds brought an unusual purple-blue. The paddy field had been using complementary colors to bring intensity of the photo. The birds are depicted as descending to feast of the seeds with flickers of black and vertical impasto strokes are used to paint the stalks of grain. Furthermore, the line that pass through the middle of the canvas easily separate the body from the sun setting in the sky. The round line of the sun very prominent. The diagonal line that separates the paddy field is visible, but at first glance is all most blended too well. In addition, the geometric shapes and organic shapes are found in the picture. The circular surface of the sun is forming by the geometric shapes. The character who is the sower and the trees are forming by the organic shape due to these two object are found in nature. Then, “The Sower” mass is very much implicit although it is implies a weight in the literal sense. Moreover, the space in this picture is mainly created with color. The painting itself is on a small surface but the picture is the distance between paddy field and the sky.
Interpretation
Through this artwork, I feel that this picture is talking about a family situation in today’s society. The sower is a single father that work at the paddy field and his child is working in the city. He always wakes up early in the morning and work from morning until evening when the sunset is arriving. He is working hard in order to gain more money to fulfill his child’s economic problem. He is working hard in order to let his child to have a bright future, this make me feel that every father in this world is a great person which fathers always did not talk much and just use action to satisfy all his child’s requirements.
Judgment
In this artwork, this theme is a response to Miller’s romantic realism and his socialist ideals. In particular, the sower is a character that Van Gogh has seen in the eternal cycle of agricultural life, glorious efforts and traditions that symbolize the artist. The sun is also a symbol of Van Gogh and in many of these paintings, it shines with mysterious light. He created a huge ball of light and a short precise stroke that radiated outward, so that the entire sky was bathed in a golden ragged. The others of the canvas consists of short, fast stroke that give the ground a texture and slightly surreal feel.
