“My young cousin who passed away at the age of two was not so fortunate.” Carolyn Hardman, like her regular routine, babysat her little cousin while her mother went to work. However, she noticed that her cousin was very ill with a fever and had a sore throat. The next morning she was unable to breathe and began turning a shade of blue. At this point, she was transported to St. Mark’s Hospital in North Salt Lake. The presiding doctors performed a tracheotomy on the two year old and did everything in their power to preserve her soul, but sadly she passed away that afternoon. “Her mother had never gotten around to getting her vaccinated…”

A vaccine is a substance that is injected into the muscle. According to the Center for Disease Control Center, vaccines carry within them the same germs that cause disease, however the germs have already been either killed or weakened to the point where they cannot cause any illness. Vaccines are used to stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies, as if it were exposed to a disease. Soon after getting vaccinated, the body develops an immunity to the disease without coming in contact with it.

Some parents might worry that vaccines cause fatal side effects. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics mentions that “most childhood vaccines are 90%-99% effective in preventing disease.” The CDC also stated that “732,000 American children were saved from death and 322 million cases of childhood illnesses were prevented between 1994 and 2014 due to vaccination.” According to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, approximately eighty-five percent of the world’s children receive vaccines that protect them from common diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and measles. Although this might seems as a success, more than three million people die from diseases that could’ve been prevented by vaccines each year and sadly, about 1.5 million of these deaths come from children who are less than 5 years old.

Yes, vaccines do contain harmful ingredients. However, the ingredients are safe in the amounts used. In fact, according to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, children are exposed to more aluminum in breast milk and infant formula than they are exposed to in vaccines. As stated by the Center for Disease control, the FDA requires 10 or more years for the testing of vaccines before they are licensed and then monitored by the CDC and FDA to make sure that the vaccines itself are safe as well as in the ingredients within.

So as parents make their decision whether or not to vaccinate their child, I urge them to. Moms- you have gone through many trials to bring your miracle into the world. So many emotions you experienced, so many good days you’ve had as well as bad. Please don’t throw it all away by deciding not to get your baby vaccinated. Please save yourself the pain as well as your friends and family-vaccinate your child.
