Vincent van Gogh, an amazing artist, had a life with its ups and downs. Born in 1853 in Groot-Zundest, Holland, he was the second child of eight. He lived his life to the fullest, filling it with many works of art but also with pain and agony. He grew up around art and it soon became his passion.
At twenty years old, van Gogh moved to London to work for a branch in Goupil & Cie. While in London, he grew to appreciate art and found great influences such as Charles Dickens and George Eliot. While he moved around, he kept in touch with his younger brother, Theo van Gogh. He kept in contact with Theo for the rest of his life. While working for Goupil & Cie, he slowly began to turn his attention to the bible and not pay so much attention to the arts. He soon became a clergymen and a preacher in England. Van Gogh fell in love with Eugenie who was already engage. His unrequited love for Eugenie eventually caused his demise in his work at Goupil & Cie.
Vincent van Gogh, still a Christian man, felt like it was his duty to continue his work in the church, but he also wanted to pursue art. He moved to Brussels and studied art and religion with an artist named Anthon van Rappard. Soon after that, he moves to Etten to live with his parents and furthers his techniques in art. He traveled a lot around this time and sees many country sides. He is told to paint 12 different angles of The Hague.

In 1886, he moves in with his brother, Theo, in Montmarte. In this period of time he meets various artists such as Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. During this time, his brother Theo supports him so that he’s able to focus all of his attention on his art. His previous art was very dark, very dreary. But after meeting the Impressionist painters, his colors got brighter. “What is required in art nowadays is something very much alive, very strong in color, very much intensified.”(Expo- Shop.com)
Gauguin and van Gogh disagree greatly on the colors that van Gogh uses. One night in December of 1888, van Gogh and Gauguin are in the midst of a heated fight and in frustration van Gogh takes a razor to his ear and severs the lobe of is left ear. He then wraps it up in cloth and gives it to a woman in the brothel they were at. Soon after that, the police take van Gogh to a mental asylum in Arles. It took van Gogh nearly a month to recover because he lost so much blood in the act of cutting his own ear off. Gauguin moved to Paris and the two never met in person again; although they did write each other every once in awhile.
After his release from the asylum, he finds a physician and painter to stay with named Paul Gachet. He finds this man to be a great man and befriends him in no time at all. “Found a perfect friend in Dr. Gachet, something like another brother.”(Expo-Shop.com) Gachet advises van Gogh to focus all of his attention on his painting. And for two months straight, van Gogh produces a painting a day. He paints his surroundings and the new people he has met. Theo tells Vincent that he wants to open up his own business and this affects Vincent greatly. He is put under a lot of pressure and on July 27, 1890, he walks into a field surrounding his house and shoots himself. He walks back into his home and Theo stays by Vincent’s side until his death on July 29, 1890. Although very skilled, he was not noticed right away. And it wasn’t until after he passed away that he really was famous for his beautiful pieces of art.
