Poverty is a choice in the world we are living now. A lot of things have changed from previous generations. Poverty was classified different in the past per example: people with color were racially profiled and were not given the opportunity to earn money. these circumstances led people to commit felonies. The old generation considered poverty a taboo, the people that were truly in need were overlooked that lead to the believe that poor people are shiftless, mindless, lazy, dishonest, and unworthy.
The common misconception that people say is that “the root of cause of poverty is low wages and lack of jobs”. In some situations that occurs per example immigration and people with disabilities. Perhaps the society has been misleading the future generation by portraying poor as a taboo.
By reading hook’s work, poverty is always portrayed as the worst way of living. Poverty can be interpreted as a double side knife, the perception of multiple people in this matter varies. Society had grouped the different types of social economic statuses by “the poor, who were impoverished; the working folks, who were poor because they made just enough to make ends meet; those who worked and had extra money; and the rich.” another example is when Hook’s professor asks the students if one of them consider themselves poor, no-one raised their hand. The reader agrees to this statement because the amount of money that a person makes can have a big impact to the way those people live. The society will always judge the people least privilege.

The society in the 1900s to 2000s were not educated enough to distinguish the problems that the country was facing, poverty and inequality were the main issues back then and now the concept hasn’t changed. Michael Harrington wrote, “There is . . . a language of the poor, a psychology of the poor, a worldview of the poor. To be impoverished is to be an internal alien, to grow up in a culture that is radically different from the one that dominates the society.” the typical race that was targeted by all of this was the black community, in the 1900s the community encountered multiple obstacles per example. The educated and non-educated people were underpaid with that being said. that led the community to clash with the government for equal opportunities and equal pay.
When the government started to help the communities, these took advantaged of them. per example welfare, unemployment, food stamps and a few others. For the past years people have been taking advantage of the government support by working off the books while being enrolled on unemployment. Welfare is another help that the government provides for people in need to meet their basic human need such as food and shelter that is being exploded by people. “In 1996, the Clinton administration enacted the “One Strike” rule banning anyone who committed a felony from public housing.
A few months later, welfare was replaced by Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)” that is one example of how the government is tracking down and executing laws to prevent that people take advantage of the government help. The problem that we have in society now is that noting is equally distributed to elaborate in that how the economic system always benefits the rich and never the people that truly needs it.
Such laws are also affecting people that really needs the help, one of the laws states that anybody with a criminal record would be closely monitored or perhaps the benefit would most likely be rejected. People deserve a second chance in life.

I disagree with the above statement because that often is not the case I have met countless people that have 2 or 3 jobs, but they are barely making it in the societies eyes I always wondered why. Well there are multiple reason one of them is the cost of living, food, transportation and personal expenses. The cost of living keeps increasing in big cities like New York.
