A famous rapper named Tupac once rapped “I wonder why we take from our women why we rape our women, do we hate our Women? 1 think it‘s time to kill for our women,” Misogyny in the music in industry has and will always be a huge problem, being promoted through the actions of its biggest stars. With some of those stars being named as Drake, R. Kelly, and Xxxtentacion sharing in on this feat, and despite having negativity to women still finding success in their craft and keeping up a cult following The message of misogyny has been said through the words and actions of its male artist.
According to the Merriam dictionary, misogyny is the “hatred of women”, this appeals to the music industry using demeaning lyrics, An example of one of these lyrics that demean women is Drake‘s “Nice for what”, which states “These hoes! They hate! Your boy! Today! . . .Bend it over. lift it up. bend it over, lift it up. make that jump’C This lyric by itself calls women out of their name and sexualizes them putting an emphasis on their bodily features. This song used to be the number one song on the billboard top one hundred peaking at the number one spot for six weeks, and is still charted on the list today being brought down to the number twenty-three spoti Another lyric that spills misogyny is from a popular rock and roll group in the 190605 through the 1970’s named the Rolling Stones who have made a song called “under my thumb” with lyrics such as “It’s down to me the difference in the clothes she wears down to me. the change has come she’s under my thumb and ain’t it the truth babe?” This lyric demeans women through putting them down, with the guy saying that he is supplying her with clothes, and she needs him so, the lady is underneath “his thumb”. This shows that this misogynistic energy of men have been in the music industry for a long time, and is not only prevalent inside of rap but in other genre’s also.
To assault someone in law, means to either inflict or threat someone else harm whether this harm is done mentally, physically, or emotionally. [n the music industry there has been men who have assaulted women in the past and present. yet still have found success. despite committing this heinous crime against women. Artist’s such as Xxxtentacion or Jahseh Onfroy who time and time again has been accused of assaulting women. For example, Onfroy had a situation on October 6, 2017 where According to Jessica Meiselman from Complex News Onfrpy had been accused of “allegedly strangled and battered his pregnant ex-girlfriend to the point where both eyes became shut and the victim could not see”.
Another incident of Onfroy assaulting woman is when there was a video of him slapping another female that released by TMZ on March 26, Despite these claims and evidence of him executing this deed Onfroy went on to have further success with his album named “?” peaking at number one spot at the billboard top two hundred on the same week as the video was released. Also, this album stayed on the billboard top two hundred for fifty-three straight weeks This shows how arguably one of the greatest artists of the 2010‘s era had assaulted women, yet instead of being shunned or shut out of the music industry the opposite happened — his career flourished, Onfray found himself having the same, in fact even more commercial success on his sophomore and junior album in “’9″ and “Skins” after the accusations. One could make an argument that women have done the same to men if not worse with one of music‘s biggest star in Cardi B or her real name Belcalis Almanzar, who’s gone on record saying. “l’d drug n***s up and I’d rob them.”
Though in this situation Almanzar wasn’t using force to lure her prey like Xxxtentacion did in the previous paragraph however just like Xxxtentacion, Almanzar still took advantage of someone else and harmed that person. However, what makes Almanzar’s situation different from the other examples and the other people who have committed this is that she committed this act before she became a popular music artist. Also, despite having social groups coming together such as the “Me too movement” that are giving women voices about how they feel about some artist and even cancelling a few artist such as Chris Brown who has a past in which he hit women the most significant being Rihanna back in 2009. Despite having success in canceling that artist there are plenty more who‘ve done the same if not worse that are still thriving and finding even more success today. Misogyny in the music industry stems from demeaning lyrics and success of those who have harmed women in the past or present.
“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex why? I made that b“*** famous” (Kanye West). Misogynistic lyrics demean women just like the one above, the line above sexualizes and disrespects women through calling them out of their name. In the music industry there are a lot of lyrics to the one above that push the idea of misogynism. and this idea’s been push by the success of artist who assaulted women and are still if not even more successful than when the incident happened. An example of this is an artist who have assaulted women named R. Kelly whose proven time and time again to have sexually assaulted women. Between 1998 through 2019 R. Kelly have found himself being in the wrong side of court when it comes to sexual assault and abuse. In February 29, 2019 R. Kelly was charged with ten counts of sexual abuse, or in 2008 R. Kelly was charged and acquitted ten counts of child pomography. Despite these allegations R. Kelly still manages to sell out some of the biggest venues in the world on his tours. This shows how in music despite having record of harming or huning women than men find themselves being championed instead hated for their transgressions against women.
