Fear can influence your decisions and it can corrupt one’s morality. Fear of losing yourself and the impact it has on a good person can force them to make a bad decision that influences their judgment and their isolation. John Proctor endured a sense of goodness and several obstacles of fear controlling how far he willing to go to protect himself and those that he loves in his community.

Fear Influence

Fear influence people take extreme measures and act irrationally John Proctor has his demons, he deals with the challenges and fear of being that person who ends up blackening and labeled as an adulterer. In act one and two, the author of “The Crucible” Arthur Miller focuses on the challenges that the protagonist Mr.Proctor is dealing with all of the dangerous and evil things he had to do to protect his reputation.

Situations that came a time when Mr.Proctor made bad life decision was when he decided to have an affair with a 17-year-old female name Abigail Williams, him committing this made him believe he was hurting his wife Elizabeth Proctor and god himself. Mr.Proctor had the feeling if god had damaged his eyes for his sin for committing adultery.

Mr.Proctor soon to realize that that fear and our sins are a dangerous weapon that will destroy Mr.Proctor, Mrs.Proctor and the life decision that can affect his community. Mr. Proctor hit more realization on how he is abominable to God and himself “PROCTOR. I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!” (Miller,132).

Redemption

Mr.Proctor fear of losing himself, God, his wife, and his reputation is how he ended up gaining the sense of goodness and realization that the only way to survive is to know your mistakes as a human being, not as a child who is trying to live up to people expectation on who you should be.

A question that I wonder throughout the book is weather Mr.Proctor is a sinner or a saint in “The Crucible”? Mr.Proctor is not a saint and he is not a sinner he is a man who has made mistakes in his life but Mr.Proctor is loving, loyal, authoritative, but his tragic flaw is his temper.

Mr.Proctor manages to redeem himself at the final act to save his soul and public image, he refuses to sign a confession, understanding that this will condemn him to death, he couldn’t live in a life where he is lying to himself and to others even though he did not want to die he knew this was the only way to save himself and to end his sins.

This quote explains his anger about himself led him to this very moment when he saw a small amount goodness in his soul but also the realization that he does not deserve sympathy. Proctor said “I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor.

Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs. Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!” (Miller,133). John Proctor death was not wasted or thrown away his death impacted on the life of the people prison or accused of suffering the same fate.
