I have been working with children in many settings for over a decade and I have been a student of visual arts even longer. It is my belief that Art Education is an integral element of a balanced education. My methods of teaching include instruction in studio-based classes, supplemented with an introduction to context with relevant art history, theory, aesthetics, and criticism. Studio-based classes are important because they are structured differently from the methods and demands of other academic disciplines. This challenges students to think critically, develop essential artistic techniques, and grow creatively in an environment that they may not be accustom to normally. Having the ability to integrate into society a core part of childhood development. Art education can help make this goal into a reality by engaging the child in viewing and analytical activities that promote understanding history, ingenuity, and community.

It is a gratifying experience to instruct students and witness them discover themselves and their abilities as an artist. As a society, we developing a higher visual way of life. With innovations like the intentioned integrating themselves into our daily lives. These show the need to teach visual literacy to my students. I believe with constant inundation of imagery it is tremendously important that students need to be able to understand and use artistic tools to discern truth and meaning within our contemporary culture. It is also my hope as an art teacher to foster each individual’s unique personal vision and while giving a well-balanced foundation in studio art. I love that there can be many equally creative and unique answers to the conceptual challenges posed in any given studio assignment. Using the ambiguous nature of the arts. In my art classroom, I love how the assessment can be a sketchbook that displays a student’s understanding of the subject, a critique that allows critical thinking and analytical development, or even a portfolio of a student’s works created with its inherent evidence of process and growth. For the final assessment, I love having students plan and hold an exhibition. The idea that every student’s work should be proudly displayed and that students should have a vital role in the planning and orchestration to develop professional organizational skills. As an art teacher, I need to model how to hold yourself to a professional standard and encourage my students to do the same.

A strong Gallery program and a Visiting Artist program are also an important element in support of any studio art curriculum. Getting students out of the classroom and into museums and galleries gives them the opportunity to gain exposure to the diverse methods and representations of the arts that can expand their view beyond their classroom and peers. It is of equal importance that professional artists be brought to the students to give them more opportunities to expand their views and knowledge.
