There will always be obstacles in life that will get in your way no matter who you are. Some can easily get over these obstacles, there are others that can’t do it alone. We must always be confident about ourselves. Sadly, there people who lack self-confidence. Theywill most likely find it difficult to be successful. During my younger years in middle school, I wasn’t the best student out of the bunch. I had a hard time focusing in class, life at home wasn’t helping, and I just didn’t have the materials required for daily instruction. This can vary from a binder to materials needed for school projects. Truth is, one of my parents was never truly there for me. My grades poorly reflected on all this. I couldn’t catch up with the rest of the students, my father was disappointed. I wasn’t at fault here, he’s the one that would distance himself when it comes to my education.
There was no way that I could convince him to buy me the things I needed to succeed. Eventually, he put the blame on me for failing my classes. It was my fault because I didn’t try hard enough. It was my fault for being too distracted. It was my fault for being too dependent on him. I fed into it, I accepted what he told me. I had lost all confidence in my future. I started believing that it would be like this for all my years in school. It was now my freshman year in high school. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to start over. This was the chance to not be as dependent on my parents as I used to before. Freshman, sophomore, and junior year went by. My grades weren’t the best but it was something that I can be proud of. I was ready for my senior year. I’d be able to graduate high school regardless of my dad doubting me. I was confident and determined to go to college. I could prove to him that he was wrong.
Many people lack self-confidence, it is needed to have a healthy life. Self-confidence is a feeling of trust in one’s abilities and judgment. This must be present in people’s daily lives in order for them to believe that they can do anything. At this point in my life, I am obtaining the confidence that I need to be ready for college. The best way to gain self-confidence is to look inside of yourself and believe that you can overcome all barriers and difficulties that you are faced with. Self-confidence is something that cannot be taught. It is up to the person to decide how much belief that they possess inside of themselves. Nobody teaches us to be happy or sad. I am at the point where I understand that I must first believe in myself before others will believe in me. When you get to the point where you allow others to speak about how you feel about life. Ask yourself if your lack of self-confidence is holding you behind from being the best that you can be. You have to be willing to take charge of your life and whatever is holding you back. Most often these emotions come from people allowing the negativity of other people to defeat them. It is time for me to take a stand and be in control of my future.
So how will this positively help me in college? We all have a part of ourselves that, from time to time, whispers defeating messages: ‘Everyone here is better than you.’ Don’t listen to them! Remind yourself that you’ve been working hard for this. Going to college is a life goal that you want to accomplish. Everyone thinks they’re the only one, they feel like there’s no one they can turn to when they’re in need of help. At some point in college, we will have doubts about ourselves in our work. Keep in mind that you’re not the only one going through this. Most of our friends will be going through the same thing (or have already gone through it). Your confidence will rise if you consult with your professor early in the semester. Whether it’s about the lecture you didn’t understand, your initial ideas for a paper, or worries about how to prepare for a test, you will feel a lot better after your instructor directs you in the right path, or assures you that you’re already going in the right direction. Many students lacking in confidence are too scared to talk to their professors. This only makes their problem worse. To conclude, college is all about new experiences and growing to be a better person. None of this is possible without being confident in yourself first.
