Earlier this year, a bus transporting the Broncos, a hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, collided with a semi-truck that had failed to stop at a red light. Sixteen was the final death toll. This event created an impact on our country that will last forever. Immediately, people jumped to action. A go-fund-me page was set up with a goal of raising four million dollars. Within a month, a grand total of just over fifteen thousand dollars was raised. Some people donated large sums of money, while others gave up as little as five dollars to the cause. No matter how much you donated, every penny gave support to the Broncos. This event, even though it was a terrible accident, showed that Canadians support and help each other and others out.
Would you be willing to give something up to help someone else? How far would you go to give someone else the quality of life that most of us have? With the Humboldt Broncos, everyone who donated, no matter the amount, contributed. And it doesn’t matter how much. So, are we responsible for the welfare of others? Yes. Whether you are donating a couple dollars to a charity or building schools in a third-world country, we all need to do our part.
In order to make our world a better place, we need to take it upon ourselves to help those who can’t help themselves. We need to be concerned for the well being of others. But you don’t have to dedicate your life to the cause. Giving your bottles to a local sports team makes a difference. Being mindful of what companies you buy from makes a difference. It doesn’t have to be a huge endeavor like building a house for and financing a homeless person.

My grandfather was a great example of this. He spent the last twelve years of his life educating and then setting up dental schools and offices with and for the people of Uganda, Rwanda, and more recently, Burundi. My grandpa would spend two six week periods of time per year in those countries. He gave a huge chunk of time to people who aren’t as fortunate as us. However, before my grandfather retired and began doing this, he did small things in his community to help people out. He would give people who were in financial trouble cheap and sometimes free dental care. He would go to his office after hours to help someone with a dental emergency. He would be a friend to anyone he met. We all need to be a little more like him to make our world a better place.
In Canada, we are all responsible for eachother. Taxpayers pay money that goes towards our education system and free health care so that everyone can have their basic needs met. Our country has made a standard that we look out for each other, and we need to follow suit.
Other people would argue that in life, you watch out for yourself. If others are in a bad position, it is their fault, and they need to deal with it themselves. An example of this is homelessness. A lot of people when they see homeless people on the streets either ignore them or are disrespectful towards them. But it isn’t always their fault if their wellbeing is compromised. Getting fired from a job or simply being born into a difficult situation are some things that happen to a lot of people and they aren’t something they can control. We need to be kind and respectful towards them. In the Aztec community, children were taught that we need to respect those who were of a lower rank or in a tough situation. This is something we need to teach our children.
We need to be responsible for the welfare of others so that everyone can have an equal opportunity to be successful in life. So, are you willing to give up something you love and give it to someone who needs it more than you do? Hopefully the answer is yes, so that we can change our world for the better.
