How People Become a Bully
From one of my sources Ditch the Label study, they spoke to 8,850 people about bullying. They asked to define bullying and then later asked if, based on their own definition, they had ever bullied anyone. 14% said yes , so that’s 1,239 people. Here are some reasons on how people become a bully, wanting to dominate others and wanting to improve their social status, having low self-esteem,having a lack of remorse or failing to recognise their behaviour as a problem, feeling angry with themselves or frustrated, struggling socially and being a victim of bullying themselves.
Impact of Bullying on the Victim
Bullying behaviour impacts the complete school community. Bullying has detrimental effects on students’ health and success. It makes students feel lonely and sad. It’s not just the students being bullied who are affected. Most students say they don’t like seeing bullying in their school and it makes them feel worried and uneasy. Students who bully others are also more likely to experience bullying themselves have
Being bullied can affect all things about a child, On how they see themselves personally, their friends, school, and their future. Students who are bullied often experience depression and low self-esteem that may last a lifetime, shyness, loneliness, physical illnesses, and threatened or attempted self-harm. Some students miss school, which cause them to see their grades drop or even leave school altogether because they have been bullied. Verbal bullying can be just as harmful as physical bullying.
Students who engage in bullying risk poor long term outcomes, including leaving school early. Some students engage in bullying for a short time only and then stop either because they realise it’s wrong or they are supported to learn appropriate behaviour. A small group of students continue to bully others over many years. Parents, whānau and schools need to support those who bully others to learn more appropriate ways to get on with others and deal with conflict and social challenges.
